Overhead gantry signage is going to be put up on the M50 mainline this weekend between the N4 and N7.....I think its between 10pm in the evening and 6am both nights. Im sure they will put up the diversions on their website. We finally get to see the mainline gantries from next Monday:) Hopefully, weather permitting, they wont have to come back to it.

Please, please, please let them be done right this time, with none of the rubbish they initially put up on the new southern section. BTW have they finished replacing the old signage yet on the whole stretch?

You mean the Phase 1 part of the construction? - If thats what you mean - no the signage is gone but not replaced yet. Still alot of work to be done on the mainline.

No, I meant the signage that was put up when the 'new' southern section of the M50 was first opened about which there was much discussion here at the time. The main problem was that the signs were implying lane splits at all the exits with the effect that people were swerving into the right hand lane just before each exit. I notice that the NRA have replaced some of them now, but never admitted they were plain wrong in the first place, and came out with some nonsense that they were doing it because it 'might have been confusing for some' or some such nonsense.

Hopefully they've learnt how to do it right by now.

This morning I noticed they put up the first cross section (over northbound lane) of what i think will be part of the new tolling structure. That must have been done last night - without closing the motorway.. why can't they do same with the gantries?

I've noticed that since they started the latest set of roadworks a few months back the traffic has been moving very nicely from newlands x and through to the naas road and long mile rd, it appears they may have cracked it! however, the M50 is still a mess!!!!

Dont know about the cross section you mean but something going up in that image?

Does not look like a gantry sign support.

@darkman2: Northbound only. Not in the picture.
Like I said this might be for the new toll cameras... or whatever else.

There are two gantries a few feet apart over the Northbound North of the toll plaza - with supports for two more over the Southbound as per the traffic cam. I'd say they are for the tolling camera's alright. These gantries only span half the motorway each, and there is plenty of space nearby for cranes/trucks (i.e. the lanes under construction). Gardai could just shut the road for literally a few minutes in the dead of night to install them and only affect a handful of motorists.

AFAIR some of the mainline gantries going up this weekend span the entire motorway, and I guess would need cranes nearer the middle of the road - centre of gravity and all that. Hopefully they will take the opportunity to put up some of the signage on the existing slip gantries too, and maybe even tar a few slips etc. while they are at it.

Alun - some of the new signage can be seen around N4 and Ballymount, but remains to be seen how the mainline will turn out. I find the arrow alignment a bit off around the N4 Inbound, but the lanes are not finalised there yet. It was nice to see the new merge signage at Ballymount showing one lane merging beside three (rather than a single black arrow with a line heading into it), and if I am not mistaken the new mainline gantries (one is on the roadside) seem to have space for electronic signs over each lane. Fingers crossed.

The second gantry holds the net that is dropped on non payers! :D

I think it would hold a second set of cameras to back up the first ones in case the image is poor for any reason.

I'm going from Blanchardstown to Leixlip and I'd like to go via M50 and then the turn off after the toll bridge. Will I be able to do this?

Is it just the M50 closed between the junctions or are the junctions closed too?

Just between the Lucan exit and the Red Cow, you'll be able to come off at Lucan

First one for signs, second one for cameras maybe?

I'd be more likely to use this route anyway and avoid the M50 altogether...

Is it not unfair to penalise only motorists who cross the river? With e-tolling do we not have the flexibility to toll the entire motorway and allow for a more equitable toll system?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 65 ✭✭wwhyte

    That's the long-term idea.

Three gantries went up on the northbound lanes, and vertical support for 2 on the southbound side. the crossections are waiting on the side of the road.

No sign of any cross whole motorway ganrties, although it looks as if there will be at least two. (could be pedestrian bridges also.)

Interesting to note that m50.ie had the following posted up before, during and after the closure. CLick "Plan your Journey" remember this when some politico is telling you he's a great lad cos it's under budget and in time

    Traffic Management Phase 1

Traffic impact during construction is unavoidable, but proper traffic planning and advanced notice to the general public can minimise the impact.

    * During all times an emergency lane will be provided.
    * During construction M50 will maintain two lanes during the peak commuting hours of 6:00AM to 10:00PM.
    * During off peak hours between 10:01PM and 5:59AM lane reductions will occur.
    * At no time will there be full closure of M50.

im going to point out the obvious here, but the m50 was not fully closed, it was only a small section in either direction on different nights, full closure would mean fom the m1 to the m11

Seeing as the upgrade scheme is only ever planned to run from Sandyford north to Junction3 and seeing as the current schemes are only from north of the Tallaght junction to south of the N3 junction, I don't think any reasonable reading of complete means the entire length from M1 to East Wall.

    From the lines
During all times an emergency lane will be provided.
    * During construction M50 will maintain two lanes during the peak commuting hours of 6:00AM to 10:00PM.
    * During off peak hours between 10:01PM and 5:59AM lane reductions will occur.
Which refer to some lanes being closed, I think complete closure would mean no emergency and no driving lanes being open.

When the Intercontinental golf thingyroad works to impress johnny foreigner with our 3 lane highway was on, the N7 saw no full closures. i.e. the N7 was always open, and no diversions to other non access or temporary roads were involved.
