    Anyone ever heard of it? its a seasonal disorder, its been pulling me apart for the last few weeks.. i dont know what to do, ive looked at various websites about it but theres not much in ireland for it from what ive gathered, just wondering if there are many people here that suffer from it and if so what measurements they take to get on with day to day things...

    Didn't hear of the disorder (doesn't mean it doesn't exist) but I can defo pin point a certain time of the year when the blues kick in and every few years it can hit pretty bad. May/June is this certain time for me.

    Here's another recent thread about Seasonal Affective Disorder. I've heard of it and I'm relatively sure I was suffering from it for a few years in college (not 100% sure though because I foolishly never went to a doctor about it as my bad bouts all happened in the evening and at night). I found that making a conscious effort to get out more during the middle of the day (i.e. when the sun was out, even if it was hidden behind cloud) helped me enormously. Also, by all accounts Light Therapy is very useful as it boosts the amount of light you get over the dark and dreary winter months, the lack of which is apparently the cause of SAD.
    If you haven't talked to your GP about this, you might consider making an appointment to get advice.

    yeah I dont wanna go all hypochondriac but this is just such a clean term for how i havent been able to sleep right and get up in the mornings :) its not that im depressed about winter i mean i like all the snow and cheer but damn how can you wake without dawnlight?

    I suffer from SAD. and I treat it with a light box. I also load up on vitamins such as Berocca, or a combination of B-complex, vitamin C.

    SAD is a recognised medical disorder of which 4% of the population suffer, and is caused by a drop in the chemical serotonin in the brain. To stimulate the production of serotonin light therapy helps as it tricks the brain into thinking its getting natural sunlight.

    Its basically akin to a human version of hibernation sleeing, constantly tired and low on energy/concentration. In fact its often refered to as the winter blues and is a form of mild deppression - but it can be treated withouth chemicals usually.

    The upshot of this is that you recognise the symptons and can treat it.

    There is a pharmacy/medical supplier on Talbot Street which sells light boxes but I don't know the name of it.

    I suffer with SAD too, and March/April is the time of year that I find quite difficult. I have yet to get a light box due to the cost but I do take plenty of vitamins. There are more sufferers out there than you think.
