Phone line or not with sky

I have recently heard 2 conflicting stories of 2 people I know who got sky + installed with multiroom when it came to the requirement of the telephone line.

One said it had to be installed for 12 months and sky would ping the box every now and again just to make sure it was in teh house it was supposed to be in.

The other said when his was going in, he told the installer it wasn't convenient to have a line going across his house and he was told it didn't matter anyway. He just needed to connect the box up for the installation and then it could come out after that.

Anyone know what is the truth behind it all?

All boxes with cards as a multiroom subscription must be connected to the same line or else you face paying for multiple subscriptions

The subsidised equipment offer from Sky, whereby you usually get free digibox, dish and standard installation, usually comprises a twelve-month contract and the condition that the box will be connected to an operational landline for the duration of those twelve months. Not being a customer, I can't tell you how strictly this is still imposed.

With fewer people now having landlines, new customers are being offered the option of an install without needing a landline, at a cost [~€40 from what I've read on these forums]. Before this, if you wanted to avoid getting a landline, you could buy the digibox yourself at its full cost, order a second-hand subscription and have the card activated and paired to the box. After this, you'd pay the 'normal' cost of the subscription.

Activation of the card usually involves a call-back but it seems many have gotten around this -- just tell the customer care representative the phone is engaged when/if asked to check.

Hope this clears up your query somewhat.

I had Sky Multiroom installed earlier this year, the second room didn't have a phone socket and I didn't fancy running one in. After reading about it on here I decided to get one of these little thingys from Maplin...

....to give me a wireless phone socket, but when I went to buy it the guy in Maplin told me it doesn't work for Sky+ so I didn't bother.

Meanwhile the guy came to install the Sky+ and I told him my dilemma and he told me not to worry about it.
The Sky+ has been sitting in the second room ever since, its not plugged into any phone socket and its still working.
Make of that what you will.....

Ok, one of the conflicting reports..........

My in-laws put sky multiroom into 2 upstairs bedrooms, after a while one of their kids moved a box into a room which didn't have a phone line.
Couple of weeks later, nasty letter from Sky saying that one of the boxes was disconnected & if it wasn't hooked up again they'd be billed for full subscription rate.
They got a phone line extension & plugged it in, after a while the kid unplugged it cos the wire was a nuisance. Another letter from Sky a fortnight later saying the box was unconnected again & they should hook up or get the full bill, and posibly disconnected.

Seems to be pot luck whether you get away with it or not.

We ordered Sky Plus a fortnight ago and at the time I had been given a provisional phone number from Eircom (new build house). I've now been told that the line won't be installed for months and we were hoping to get Sky installed in time for Xmas. What do I do?

    Go with the install anyway.

I am in the same situation, months waiting for eircom in a new estate.
I got Sky + and multiroom two weeks ago, no eircom line but a VOIP phone.
Callback did not work for installer so he called Sky on his mobile and they activated the cards.
I noticed that the box tried a number of callbacks the following day, I am not sure how successful they were but I will wait till I get the 'you must connect you box or else letter' and take it from there

Oh and of course Sky now do a Sky + without phone line offer that costs an extra €40 approx, a few threads here on it already.

Hm. Info details says it can work with settop boxes.

I can confirm that the "One For All" branded wireless DECT extensions do work with Sky+

The day the installer tried a callback, it took an awful long time & he said 'if it doesnt work i'm gonna have to take the box with me & come back again', thankfully it worked :)

What if the person already paid the extra €40 approx, is it straightforward when upgrading to sky+?
