Anyone want to sell me a frame

I'm looking for an old racer frame with horizontal drop outs.

Would need to be around the 58cm size mark and around €100 in Dublin. I've been watching the usuals like gumtree, adverts and buy and sell, also been to a few markets and car boots but haven't found anything that suits (ebay prices are above and beyond and unwillingness to deliver also turns me off).

    Any help appreciated

    Fixed gear conversion, is it?

Well, I'm going to go single first. I'm not so sure I have the gonads for fixed yet, maybe if I hadn't as much dodging and stop-starts to do!

Seriously man, ebay is the only place to go for this. I got two really good frames off it, including P+P and after the sterling conversion they still both only clocked in at the €60 mark. And the second one has a headset, saddle stem and bottom bracket (not sure if its the right size because the frame is still sitting in my front room, havent done anything with it in months) which seriously will cut down on future expenses. You just have to be extremely patient. Dont get stressed when you get outbid at the last second or whatever. Another one will be along in a while.

    Good luck

Oooh I don't know. Like I said takes guts in heavy commuting traffic.

Thanks for the links. I'm going to keep an eye on the last one. The nice lugs Reynolds was up before and didn't make its reserve.

Can you tell me what search criteria you used or as you said is it just patience?

I think somebody on here has a back wheel with a single speed on one side, fixed on the other, so you can do either based on which way you attach the back wheel. Go to Sheldon Brown dot com and look for “flip flop hubs”. I don't have one, but it looks like the way to go.

I echo what the gadabout said about the flip-flop hub, I got one on my Specialized Langster (but I never change it to the single speed one).

Search criteria? Start with the word "frame" and work your way through the different bicycle parts sections that come up (cos if you just put in frame as the search word, all the complete bikes for sale also come up, cos the frame description for them will be included in their entries..). Under frames there's a drop down menu on the left of the screen so you can browse by frame type. Sometimes people will put the frame into the wrong section, e.g. they'll put a racing frame into the road or mountain bike section, and you wont get much interest in it.

I posted up a pic before of the one I built myself with the yellow and blue frame, which cost me about €50, including P+P. Never had any problems with it. I love it.

Hey, them links above I posted are actually only about a third of the frames I saw in the racing frames section, I didnt realise there was a page 2 and 3 from the results! You can probably find them yourself now, if you cant let us know.

If you end up getting something, post up a pic here

    Good luck with it

hey i was looking at double fixed one of those, cycleogical. any good? i need a new back wheel and it needs to be cheap, but i'd never heard of EX.

I've only had these wheels about four months but they seem pretty robust. Laced to the EX hubs are Mavic Open Sport rims - entry level but reliable enough, it would seem.

I did break one spoke and that caused the wheel to go a wee bit out of true but I don't know if the hub had anything to do with that. I doubt it cos I replaced the spoke about a month ago and haven't had a problem with it since.

I've a Paddywagon with a fixed/free flip-flop, but to be honest, the free side is never used... just go fixed, and you'll never look back.

On that topic, friend of mine said she was in some (unspecified as of yet) store, and saw some fixies on sale for about 200 quid.. anyone know where this place is!? I need to get a better description when I see her next I think

I'd keep an eye on the Roberts frame too. Chas Roberts is a london framebuilder of considerable reput. My brother bought a custom touring frame back in 1990 and he still has it. Raves about the quality etc. Steel is real etc.

That Roberts is just beautiful, you may have to bid against me if that's the one you're after :D

    she's a beauty. it's at £31 now, but i predict that'll go for well over a hundred.

edit: i just had a bid on it, but some fúcker has an auto bid thingy on it so i bailed out a £44.
    sigh...

The roberts ended at £50 last time without meeting its reserve, so not sure what it'll go for this time, but I might have a go

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

Went for £64 this time and still reserve not met.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Frog Brother

hear you on the flip flop. have a langster and use the free side to go over Howth. but it stays fixed nearly all of the time. great way to wean yourself in to using the fix.

Following your advice I have managed to find substantially more frames and well within my price range. Finances are the prob now so it may well have to wait until after Christmas. I have to move on it though, my old mountain bike doesn't seem to like sitting on one speed.

Cool. Good luck with the eBay hunting. I know it can be frustrating alright - IMHO best thing to do is bid about a couple of quid above the nearest bid about 30 seconds from the end, and then bid your utmost highest what you want to pay for it about 15 seconds from the end. Hope you get something decent.
