.mkv to avi

    Now that the xbox 360 plays divx/avi i have a few hd movies in mkv format, whats the best way to convert them so i can play on the xbox without loseing quailty

    MKV is just a container. You should be able to stream copy directly to .avi without losing any quality or having to re-encode. Virtualdub / virtualdubmod will help you do this (on windows, mencoder or avidemux on other platforms). Depending on file size, it will take anywhere from seconds to a couple of minutes.

    MKV does have some advantages over .avi though (it can hold subtitles files for example).

    edit: I just see that you specified divx. I'm assuming your .mkv files are x264. If that is the case, you will need to re-encode to divx / xvid. doom9 has a bunch of guides on video encoding.
