Lately I've noticed that when I've recieved packages I've ordered online from the UK that the postcode section is filled in "ZZ75" despite me having filled it in as "Eire" on the address form. I've looked it up online and noticed it is the postcode on many addresses all over Ireland. Is ZZ75 actually the correct Irish postcode? It's new to me.

Republic of Ireland never accepted postal code system. They use OCR (optical character recognition).
As they got optically lost :D in Dublin, they created areas D1-D24.
As they where advised the codes system could save up to [FONT=&quot]€40 milion they going to lauch it.

I would use 0000 or ----, I would never put eire down. Dunno why so many companies in the UK do, it makes no sense. They put post in the letter box, the last name should always be the english spelling, e.g. if a Chinese person addressed the letter the name and beginning could all be in Chinese, and then "China" at the bottom. This way the English speaking sorters in the post office will put it in the correct destination section, it gets to China and they take it from there. Same goes for all countries. e.g. I doubt english countires put Allemange down when sending letters to Germany.

If they want to show off their Irish skills for whatever reason they should have the rest of the address in Irish.

But Ireland is commonly referred to as Eire, in Britain. Most British would know it straight away, even though we'd never refer to Ireland that way.

I know, and only because they continually make a mess of the address!

Just a mini rant I was having.

When I order anything from the UK and they ask about post codes I just tell them the following.

Just print the address I have given you and at the end of the addtess print IRELAND in caps. You dont need to bother about the bit above Ireland . Just make sure IRELAND is in caps and the postman here in Ireland will know where to deliver it.

Some sites with shopping on-line can verify ZIP code, like I had last time and order didn't go trough.
But the problem is much bigger: most of sat nav system can lead you by code exactly in the place - try to use it in NI.
