Seems like a good deal!! I have phantom of the opera and TMNT in my basket already!
Does anybody know if I can order from Amazon.com with my 3v card and have them delivered to an American address?? Would be handy because my cousin will be coming home for xmas in about 12 days and I could avoid the potential customs duty.
    thanks

You do know that some blu ray discs are region locked?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭ow2h7nft1me9i4

yeah of course. But phantom of the opera and TMNT are region free.:)

Any of the ones I checked in that offer were "All regions". Amazon tends to bring up a warning when you proceed to checkout if you are ordering items from one region to be delivered to an address outside that region, but I would advise to check yourself anyway.

Amazon.co.uk are also selling a lot of Blu-ray discs relatively cheap (bigger range than on Amazon.com) - many are up to 33% off, and others have smaller reductions, but are included in a 3-for-2 offer:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_51994465_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000124583&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=right-2&pf_rd_r=0V1F4HBY5T3SAQDBRAPR&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=165414591&pf_rd_i=283926

Only problem is that I put three of the 3-for-2 discs in my basket, then went to checkout, where each disc appeared 50p more expensive, plus the site did not seem to recognise the 3-for-2 offer. Try it out yourselves.

That is true, however I posted this because the blu ray discs in the offer are from warner, who produce region free discs.

For further details on what discs are region free I think that http://bluray.liesinc.net/ is a good resource.

Yeah, that happened to me on Amazon.uk. I contacted customer service and they said that while the VAT rate in Britain is 17.5%, it's 21% in Ireland and so they have to charge that rate for Irish orders.

That's bolleaux if I ever heard it.
I'd bet good money that they don't pay the Irish government any VAT. They jusy pay the 17.5% to the UK government, and pocket the difference.

Why don't they ship electronic goods to Ireland if we pay our VAT rate?

Is it not because of the EU producer recycling fund rather than anything to do with VAT?

Edit: Just checked for an Xbox game and price was higher at checkout than in store. Thats a bit crap alright.

As a guy once said, "Something is rotten in Denmark".

This doens't make any sense at all. Other sites like Play.Com dont re-adjust their vat rates when buying, so why should Amazon.

I've purchased a laptop and two 32" LCD tvs this week from a UK site, and was only charged the 17.5% vat rate.

I dont understand why we should be charged the 21% vat rate. I thought we had a thing called the single market????

Once you've paid the appropriate vat rate of the country where you purchased the goods, you are not liable to pay the irish rate.

I doubt very much that Amazon are paying the difference in vat to the Irish Exchequer

Looks like a big pile of steaming monkey crap!

    Absolutely fantastic offer!

I just got four (3 of them my favourites movies) for €47 inc. upgraded shipping! Will be here before christmas plus I selected the gift option which removes the product value from the packing slip.. no customs duty hopefully :D

    Got:
    Troy
    Alexander
    300
    Blood Diamond

So frustrating as not only are the first two not released over here, the other two are over €30 by themselves... 300 is €36 in ****ing hmv.. thieves!

    BARGAIN! :D

So eventually my discs arrived over two weeks late...and had to pay 20 euro customs charge :(

Did anyone else also have to pay this and what is the best way to avoid it in the future?

Don't get so many at one time, to keep it below the threshold, and don't order so close the Christmas.

I ordered 4, got them before christmas (actually got them 5 days after ordering) and had no customs problems. Sorry to hear that you got caught.

If they are liable to duty then they are being shipped from outside the EU so the single market does not apply and they should charge the vat rate of the destination country according to EU rules.

Yeah I ordered 4. I did order one on its own before Christmas without any problems, so maybe two is the weight limit. Anyway thanks lads...by the way if you get them gift wrapped do you avoid customs charge? I paid 19 euros on the 4 discs I got.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 973 ✭✭✭Super Sidious

Limit is €22... geting it giftwrapped should ensure they dont see the price of the items you bought... so hopefully they dont charge anything aswell, may be worth the extra 4 dollars to get it giftwrapped if u get a large boxset or something!

Had 6 deliveries from these BOGOF deals over the xmas and not been hit once for customs. All of the packages seemed to ship via Auckland New Zealand, so maybe that helped.

Under VAT law as Amazon is a foreign supplier making sales to non-VAT registered people in Ireland they must charge Irish VAT where the value of these sales exceeds Euro35k in a calendar year.

If other foreign sellers aren't charging Irish VAT they mustn't have exceeded the threshold.

Also got caught for 4 of them... €20 quid , 50% the price i paid for them including delivery! How did they work it out i taught it was 35%?
