    Hi Folks,
Test drove a 99 auto diesel E220 at the weekend and am thinking about investing. There is 140k miles but the car is in very good physical nick and good mechanically. Any thoughts on this car either way? The price would be ~€10k or so.

For a start using the word "investing" in relation to a car doesn't really fit :D

Those Older Diesel Mercs are lovely though, especially if full leather and aircon etc

It sounds like the E220 CDI Model which gave serious fuel system problems. The injectors and the high pressure fuel pump went very often.

Be very wary if it is a bit slow to start when cold and especially if hot.

See if you can get a mechanic to come with you to have a look at it and tell him to remove the cover over the diesel injectors. If he/she finds a kind of oil gunk (Carbon Deposit) surrounding the injectors walk away from the car. This mean oil and carbon deposits are escaping around the injectors. Inturn the injector will most likely be seized in the cylinder head and you will need to remove the cylinder head and usually results in a new cylinder head and four new injectors.

But if all of this is ok you wont drive much better car than a Merc Auto. :D

A 99 is not an older Merc diesel. The old ones are 8v mechanical fuel injection and no ECUs, they do go on forever with a modicum of care. :)
