Just sent this to my club mailing list, but a thought a fair few folks here would be interested..

    http://www.planetrugby.com/Story/0,18259,3824_2943053,00.html

    Summary:

    1. Backs to be five metres back from the scrum.

    2. Lineouts: quick throw-ins can now go backwards, towards own
goal line. (interesting? pass from hooker directly to out half?)

    3. For all offences other than offside and foul play, the sanction is
a free kick rather than a penalty.

    4. If a player passes or carries the ball from outside to inside his
own 22-metre line and he or a teammate kicks it into touch, the
lineout will be from where the ball is kicked out.

Sounds like they will be made worldwide changes for a year, on a trial..

Its almost the end of the line for unfit props :D

The rest of them are on the shelf for the time being it seems

Don't agree with the backwards pass from a quick-throw.. Will take the focus away from lineouts! At the end of the day it's still a crooked throw, and against the idea of a lineout..

Disappointed to see the laws regarding tackling & rucks have been shelved.. Was looking really interesting..

^^ I have never seen a backwards throw allowed??

I just think it's unfair, allows teams to negate the effect of an inferior lineout somewhat..

It would also result in more aerial shenanigans, which I think we've seen enough of lately! Imagine.. the 10 kicks for touch.. team throws in quickly to their full back, kicks back up the field.. could get a little ridiculous in the same way keeping the ball in play did at times during the WC

Quick throw ins are rarely straight, mostly due to the fact that the linesmen or ref aren't in line to make a solid call.

the point is that now I can be standing on the 22 and 'quick throw' to a player back 5m from the line..

..not even pretending it was straight :)

But your right, I have never seen a crooked throw called for a quick throw..

I'm pretty sure I'v seen quick throws ruled as crooked before..

Dave, how do you figure I'm misunderstanding? The ball is thrown out by the team in possesion prior to the formation of a lineout. Allowing backwards throws = removing the ability of the other team to contest possesion

Presumably but I may be wrong you can only have a quick throw if no one else has touched the ball and the lineout hasn't formed so fail to see how it lessens any contest as there is none.

Sorry I probably could have made that clearer.. What I mean by contest is that, under the present system, the opposition can prevent a quick throw by getting a man up quick enough in line with the thrower, hence allowing a lineout to be formed and subsequently set their defence/contest for the ball..
