I took this photo about 8 months ago but it just happens to be getting a fair bit of publicity and commentary at the moment so I thought I'd post it up here to see what you lot think...

Great idea. But, shame it's a bit blown out on the left side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

Thats Kinda cool, theres a few distractions for me though.
The blown highlights already mentioned, and the cars in the background take away from the overall feel. The Black and White feels a little flat too, but thats not a major issue.
Nice idea though, Id definetly be loking to retake that one.

Nice find with the 4 windows, where was this taken? Great idea.

If the shot was more head-on you would have all 4 windows equally backlit, which would be better I think. Guess that was the widest aperture you could shoot it at? A bit more fuzziness in the background would emphasise those nice dark figures in the blown-out windows like.

i like it too , very original idea

I couldn't care less about the blown out highlights. I'd love if you left a tiny bit more room for text at the top though.

    Nice one!

Hmm, I actually agree with nearly everything that's been said so far. Esp Alans bit there about leaving room for text at the top. The shot was originally intended for promo use but there's always been difficulty using it because there's nowhere to put text on it. You can see it up around town right now and how a certain unnameable irish promoter have obscured most of the image with the gig info.

Also, there was an insane amount of photoshop went into this, i'd be embarassed to show the original infact. I did perspective correction, given that I was on the ground shooting upwards - black and white conversion - cut out the window and 4 lads and blurred and blew out the background to make the 4 lads stand out more. Infact, if you see the poster printed around town, have an upclose look and you can see what an awful awful job I did in photoshop land, all the cutouts are horrifically obvious. Danny (the bottom right) was actually cutout from a seperate photo, to make him look a different way.

Thanks everyone for the comments, always good to get constructive critisism

Normally wouldn't do this - but this is more a judge of my photoshop skills then anything I suppose - so I'm posting a copy of the original file as it came out of my camera - for comparison

Would you mind if I had a fiddle?

Nice idea. Nice shot. Have you considered doing a selective colour process to make the people colour and the rest b&w ? Might concentrate the focus on them more.

Al will almost certainly make this a gem when he gets his hands on it !

    Nicely done

I prefer your b&w to the original but it'll be interesting to see how Fajitas handles it. Great idea though.

I've gotten very side tracked, and haven't been able to finish it this evening, will have something to post in the morning!

Aha! Kinda why i asked about the PS side of things, but that being said the acid test for an image that has been photoshop'd is whether or not the image remains believable. I'd vote it into the believable category anyway - just a curious eye would spot some minor inconsistencies. And heck if its gotten an image on billboards around town then you must be doing something right

if anyone wants to see how awful the photos are blown up, theres one in print on the blue panelling outside NCAD. Few of you guys go there right?

    Was this taken in Liverpool?
I used to walk by that building/carpark/ all the time, on my way home from the docks.
    Great Idea

Right, that was my go at the photo above. Though the above was not what I had seen in my final photo. I'd done something similar with another band, using polaroids, but anyways...

All borders done by hand...er...I mean, tablet - images cropped from the image above. This wouldn't be my final layout. They can be used in a row, vertical or horizontal, etc etc, with the text around them.

So yeah, 5 x 4 polaroid transfers are in fashion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 325 ✭✭iamnothim

wow, those borders are amazing. you did them by tablet!! fair play. they look great as a series like that, never thought of using them that way

    *runs off to charge tablet*

@mobileblog - yes, this is liverpool. Some lovely spots for taking photos out there. The rest of the set we took that day is up on flickr here -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/daramunnis/sets/72157600906611015/

I have the PDF's, but they're too big for Email - one is over 200 megs, the other 44 megs...

As said previously i like the original photo -- just thought i'd say there a damn good new Irish band too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭kjt

Nice shot, the only thing that lets the shot down is the car in the background.
+ the band themselves, FAR too over-hyped!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 325 ✭✭iamnothim

hey hey hey, lets not say things we cant take back :)

i'm playing keys for said over hyped band now!
