Seconded. Can queue files from DVDs belonging to TV shows to rip episodes into seperate .avi files too.

Handbrake is great... Although its been giving me probs the odd time lately. Been trying to rip my Father Ted boxset. For some reason it wont read disk one... Was able to do a two pass encode on disk 2. Same on disk 3 except for last two episodes that would only encode on a single pass.....

When it does work(which it does 95% of the time) its great, Very good quality rips and its quite fast....

Been using handbrake for a few months now but have just bought "Visual hub" for converting avi to MP4 for the iphone.

    Fantastic

    Handbrake is great.

I read on the Handbrake forums that they suggest that you use MacTheRipper (freeware) to actually rip the DVD and then use Handbrake to convert/encode it. I have not idea why but maybe it does a better job or something. *shrugs*

I use iSquint to convert my rips to Mp4 for my nano. iSquint is the smaller (and free) brother of VisualHub.

Anyway, Handbrake is a great programme.

for the purposes of this thread i'm assuming that everybody actually owns copies of the DVDs they are ripping, copyright issues and charter compliance etc.... :p

    VisualHub for me!

Well it's handy for transferring your DVD collection down so you can watch it on your portable media player.

No different to ripping your CD collection onto your hard drive to play in iTunes...

    absolutely!!!!

just giving the benefit of the doubt - we wouldn't want to be talking about illegal things would we :D

Although I think that technically under Irish legislation ripping CDs onto your hard drive to play on your iPod is illegal.

I'm converting a lot of my DVDs in preparation for me getting Apple TV next month, as I plan to use my Macbook with an external movie HD for most of the films I watch. Handbrake is great for ripping Friends at the moment! 40+ DVDs, all double sided!

not as such really......its all open to judicial interpretation as the wording of the Act is somewhat imprecise, but sections 50(1) and 50(4) Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 are the relevant exceptions to copyright infringement as required under EC law.
50.—(1) Fair dealing with a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work, sound recording, film, broadcast, cable programme, or non-electronic original database, for the purposes of research or private study, shall not infringe any copyright in the work.
    (4) In this Part, “fair dealing” means the making use of a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work, film, sound recording, broadcast, cable programme, non-electronic original database or typographical arrangement of a published edition which has already been lawfully made available to the public, for a purpose and to an extent which will not unreasonably prejudice the interests of the owner of the copyright.

I think anyone who listens to music on their stereo or music player could possibly fall under "private study", and its not unreasonable to say that listening to music you have purchased, on another device you own will neither "unreasonably prejudice the interests of the owner of the copyright", nor is "a purpose and (to) an extent which will not unreasonably prejudice the interests of the owner of the copyright."

While the RIAA, IRMA and the IFPI like making noise and doing alot of chest-beating, the exceptions for honest purchasers are there*.

    *pending judicial interpretation
