Does anyone know where I can get cheap manual flash guns and flash sync slaves? I have a major off-camera flash project next year and I need about 6-10 of each. I've tried all the shops on eBay but they want to charge full post for each unit (eg in sterling £2.99 for the tiny slave + £3.99 delivery!!)

In fairness some will give a discount of 50p for each extra item shipped

    Any help appreciated,

    Dave

Given that you're looking at 6-10 of them, this'd wind up being an expensive option, but Gadget Infinity do the Strobist manual flash of choice, the Vivitar 285, for $90. They seem to have various packages, so might be open to negotiation on shipping etc.

Thanks for the help guys. I need to light big trucks along with buildings and bridges in the background in the dead of night, so a bank for smaller flashes will do a better job that 1 or 2 bigger, more powerful ones.

I got 4 great ones from Hall's in Talbot St in D1 but they were €30 each. It's now looking like I'll need nearer 20 of the buggers so even a tenner cheaper makes a big difference. Steve, that's why I haven't contacted Sheldon, I don't think you'll get much cheaper in Dublin

They're made in Singapore and are simply called FL-MX29, but with no built in slave it'll mean another 10 to 15 Euro on top. These are basic, no tilt, no swivel flashes but they all fire at the same guaranteed power. So mixing and matching is not really an option (thanks all the same JMcL and quilmore).

The Hong Kong prices are great, it's just the shipping that's killing it. The eBay merchants use it as extra revenue as it doesn't cost €60 euro to post 10 small slaves not much bigger than a sugar cube and much lighter

A little bit off topic but I used the same reply for another guy, what about the hiring contractors lights to light the scene? serious output and constant light?

Thanks for the thought Borderfox, that scenario would be ideal for a single shot, but it's a year long project and will entail up to 100 locations around the country,

It's a personal project heavily influenced by the photo's of Steam Trains at night taken by an American Photographer called O. Winston Link.

I may have found the right kind of flash (with a built in slave :D) on Amazon. Haven't checked out the shipping yet. They're Yanks though, so might be amenable to a bit of haggling :)

Heh, my dad has those from 'back in the day'. They're tiny/not much use.

Try looking for "Wide angle Slave Flash" if you want to go down that road.

Amazon won't ship electronics to Ireland so you'll need to send somewhere in between first...:(
