Can anyone share experiences of commuting from Malahide to DCU by car or public transport? Never done it but thinking about moving to Malahide. The 105 bus seems to have a very limited service and be very slow. Thanks.

Haven't got any personal experience but a few of my friends do it and it's a pain in the arse. The 105 is terrible, and theres no other direct bus so you could end up getting two. Haven't heard of any problems by car though, other than expected rush hour traffic

Dart in Killester and shuttle bus to DCU?
I've never seen this shuttle bus but they have it avertised in stations

DART and then shuttle bus would be the best approach - I had a mate who lived in Portmarnock and that's how he got to DCU.

There's a bus from Killester to DCU (103) but there's nothing shuttle about it.... you could go to Howth Junction and get the 17A, it's a lot more frequent, a lot more reliable but because of the road works on Oscar Traynor, it can be very very slow. 105 is probably your best bet.

I live in portmarnock and drive in everyday ... takes about 20 mins unless I leave beween 8:20 and 9:00 in the morning then it can take up to 45 minutes.

Before my driving days I used the 105, theres one in every morning and 2 home every evening, if you're in for 9 to 5ish like lectures its grand. Theres loads of other bus ways in but none of them are great.

If you'll be driving in then you'll have no problems living in Malahide.

230 to pavilions in swords then 41 in could be an option

105 is awful. Rare times it just doesn't turn up and most times when it does you will be a bit late for 9am lectures. Also annoying if you're lectures don't start at 9. It's grand for getting home though as it's always been on time departing then and it runs twice a day home.

I live near the 17a bus stop and took it quite regularly before I started cycling to DCU. 09:10 bus would get me into a lecture by 10:00 almost every day... 08:50 was always on time. Works going on there now so it could be even worse.

DART to Clontarf Rd. and then the 103 is an option but I took the 103 once and it went a frustratingly circuitous route that took ages. I was terribly hungover though so maybe it's not quite as bad as I remember.

Personally, in your case, I'd probably look into getting a car or, failing that, getting the DART to Killester and cycling up Collins ave from there. Maybe you can get a cheap bike and keep it locked at the station? It's only about 4km so you'll be in DCU in no time cycling (~11min.) The DART from Portmarnock takes ~11 min too so that's a very nice commute time when compared with the other options.

I don't know if Killester has anywhere you can lock a bike though, if it doesn't you could try Clontarf Station which is only slightly further away.

You're right... it's worse than you imagined.

I realise this is a bit late, but I live in Malahide and the commute is a pain. I get the 42 to Donnycarney and then walk up Collins Avenue to DCU (the walk is about 40 mins). It's annoying.

Again, the 17A should be useful for you when the bus lane opens soon. Get off the 42 at Tonlagee Road (after UCI), turn left and go to the first stop there. Should take 15 mins after the lane is finished.

The 105 stopped running a few years ago, but there's a DCU bus that was running last year (that I presume is running this year too because I haven't heard otherwise) that goes to Malahide.

Thanks for the update. Trying to find out if the "DCU" bus to Malahide is running this year.

Are there any other options to get to dcu by public transport e.g. im coming from wicklow .. seems to be a right pain for most. Looks like the car is best option..

It seems crazy that there is no longer a shuttle bus to Killester Dart Station. Recently I had to go from DCU to Portmarnock and got the 17A to Howth Junction seemed awkward ways
