    Linux Format

Maybe pricey, but has a good cover DVD and great articles and support

    Thats my cents worth

I find the journalistic style of Linux Magazine to be quite serious in comparison to Linux Format. Also, Linux Format has treated me well -- won a competition and a Tux t-shirt :p

The magazine is quite pricey -- over €11 a month. You can save by subscribing. Didn't think twice about spending this much before I had broadband because I didn't have any other way of getting the latest distros.

I read Linux Format. For someone like me who's fairly new to *nix its very friendly. Good articles and excellent cover DVD (which is the reason for the price btw - mags that have a disc have to charge full rate of VAT - mags without don't).

And damn Twinview - just got slaughtered by a Fel Reaver cos I was typing this response while drinking for mana :(

It's probably because there is only three Linux magazine available in Ireland on the shop shelves. The third been "Linux user and Developer".

There's also Linux Journal. I don't particularly like Linux User and Developer, I always found it a bit lacking.

I like Linux Journal myself, along with Magazine and Format. Basically, Journal is really serious, but can showcase some really interesting things, while magazine is in the middle, and Format is certainly the most readable, and has a lot of useful stuff on the dvds.

The problem is, I tend to straddle the levels of unix use, so I find that each one is quite useful to me. I mean, I found out how to use the Twisted libraries for python thanks to Linux Journal.

One useful thing is that Linux Journal has all its archives online, except for the current issue. I don't think the other two do that. So it's one you can get away with not buying.

    Regards,
    Aoife

Only buy a Linux magazine if you need or want to read an article. Other than that the Irish linux User Group is your best resource. Some very knowledgeable people are on that list.

To my disappointment, their site has been down for a good few days, even if it is rather static content-wise. Any idea what's going on?

It's just been slow. I haven't looked at it in an age tbh. It's back up now anyway.
