I have the name of a great builder who did a friends house and next on my list of todo's is finding a good architect. We're hoping to addon to a semi detached house, 2 extra rooms on the ground floor. Can anyone reccommend a good architect for this kind of work in the North Co Dublin area preferrably.

not directly . log on on to your local authority website . go to "online planning"
search closeby addresses and see what permissions have been built "on the ground" .
talk to the occupants . ask if they were happy with the architect ( and builder ) . you will assemble lists in this way

I know a guy you might be interested in using. He's a friend of a friend and I was planning a shed extension on a semi detached 3 bed property on the northside of Dublin also. He's a young lad and the designs were quite comprehensive. He even got all the other stuff for me such as site maps. <snip>. I've since decided to scrap those plans and use him to design an open plan extension to the rear of same property. I'm sure the price will be minimal as he still has the original plans stored. Post me if you need contact details.

Opps, I meant to reply before now.
What service exactly are you looking for, as the "best" option will vary depending on what you want/need. Do you know what you want or do you want somebody to "design" an extension for you. Do you want it to match the existing, or be a modern add-on that is in contrast to the original (such a This, this or this) . Do you require somebody to bring the project to planning only or do you require the person to stay involved until construction is complete.

Planning only for an extension that matches existing
Planning only for an extension that is contrasting and modern
    Planning and project managing, certification

    test

The extension would ideally match in with the existing building. Not very difficult to do I don't think in my case.

what above level of service, do you require a planning permission package completed only, or are you looking for someone to project manage and/or certify the completed works. depending on the above the price you can except to pay will differ greatly, as would be best person for the job.

Sorry, it's probably more for design only, I believe the builder I have in mind has a colleague who will certify completed works etc. Thanks

If its planning only then your best option, imo, is to get an Architectural Technologist (or somebody who does alot of PPs, some engineers etc) to carry out the work. To have an architect carry out his full range of duties for an extension (unless you want one like above) is overkill and will add cost. A technologist will, in general, be better at producing a planning application due to a better knowledge of the regs and will be faster/better at drafting. If its planning only you will only pay for planning only. Obviously some architects offer this service to the same standard too. Best thing to do is get a few quotes.
