Wormeries available in Ireland

I originally posted this elsewhere but nobody replied. Probably because I chose the wrong board!

    Anyway...

For some time, I've been considering getting a Worm Composter. As with many things, however, the range available in the UK is far more comprehensive than here (I'm in Cork). I tried making my own once, but it just got too messy.

I enquired about 12 months back with a company across the pond called Original Organics but they weren't able to deliver to Ireland. Recently, however, I got an email from them as they've launched an Irish operation. "Great!!" - I thought. Ordered one last week and it arrived in a few days and it really is fab!!

Does anyone else have a Wormery? If so, which type? How do you find it? I went for "The Original Wormery" from these people : www.wormery.ie

Does anyone know how long it's likely to take for me to start getting the feed from it?

I am actually in England visiting family this weekend, so I've left it to it's own devices - which is what the instructions told me to do for the first week.

    Thanks!
    Steve.

I've got the Can'O'Worms, ( from www.ecoshop.ie) and after an initial period when it was a bit problematic, it's ticking along just fine now.

One thing to look out for, especially in the beginning and especially in winter time is overfeeding. For a start, when you first start, the worm population is going to be quite low, and you need to let it build up before you start feeding large quantities. Secondly it being winter time, they're not going to be at there most productive, so take it easy to begin with, and keep an eye on how quickly the food you're putting in is digested.

I personally found that anything from the onion family seemed to upset them, plus citrus peel is a bit of a no-no. Also go a bit easy on things like bread and starches (rice etc.). They're OK, but you can get localised heat build-up which can cause problems.

There's a great forum to be found at http://www.recycleworks.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=5 where you'll find all kinds of experienced vermiculturists who'll be more than willing to help.

    Good Luck!

i have a compost pile out the back garden, hadn't turned it since November in fear of spiking a hedgehog or some other hibernating animal with my pitchfork and my god i could go into business selling all the wriggly things in there!! the worms were initially added through soil and they have multiplied like crazy. seperating the compost from the new stuff is going to be problematic. i have tried reading books on composting and have just come to the conclusion that it's a natural process and as long as attempts are made to balance out the greens and browns and to turn it once a week, then it'll be fine.

I have a can-o-worms - bought approx 2 years ago and the worms are up to the top of the second tray. It isn't all that much quicker than a plain old compost heap but the soil produced is worth the wait

    Hi there,

After looking up threads, I see that www.wormery.ie seems to be the place to buy a wormery but the website has been down for days.

Any one know the story with it?

    Cheers
    Jeanne
