Evening, just wondering can anyone reccommend me a specific gearbox to fit a dboys m4. The one in it is ok, i just think a new gearbox would be a good way of prolonging its life. Also, will i need to get a new hopup unit aswell?
And finally, will i need/should get a new motor along with it.

Tokyo marui type 2 box, its an exact copy.(correct me if I'm wrong)

And its a decent box, mines working great. Most aegs use standardised mechs so dont worry about getting parts.

If it ever does break its a standard gearbox with compatible parts, no need to swap em out yet!

The hop unit is metal, but you could replace the rubbers in it for better ones.

    How old is this aeg?

You can get a DBOYs gearbox and element hopup from RSOV.com shipping costs are not too bad if you keep all the items under 2kg in total. Beware the fps of this gearbox may be high so you may need to replace the spring. The same goes for any complete gearbox you buy, check the specs to make sure it fires under 1 joule.

Thanks Moto, it 5-6 months old i think, had about 15000 bb's through it give or take. I cant seem to find the gearbox in any of the sites on the newbie thread, does anyone have a link?

mechbox.com has a list of gearbox types, last time I checked m4s use type 2s.

Where to get one? I suppose wgcshop.com sell pretty much everything...

PS yeah thats alot of use! More than mine anyway, but if it ever goes m4/m16 parts are the most common.

Edit: ehobby too, id say most shops you know of stock upgrade parts, especially m4 ones.
The actual gear box itself on the dboys is metal so prob no need to replace it, maybe a new piston and gearset? Most commont to wear out is the teeth.

You could look at something like this.

A full gearbox not sure on the fit for a Dboy though

that systema mechbox would be quite impressive, m100 spring (approx 1J) and a turbo motor, you'd probably be looking at about 20 rounds per second on an 8.4v battery

the hopup unit in the dboys m4 is decent enough, but as suggested you should replace the hopup rubber for a higher quality one as this will make a world of difference

if you want to learn a bit more about the internals of an aeg while your at it, you could order all the required parts and build the gearbox yourself (you can get pretty much all the parts together in a full tuning kit (FTK)) and then use the original motor or buy a systema one, same with the gearbox shell itself, at 1 joule and <20rps rate of fire, the stock gearbox shell should be fine, the systema one's however are re-inforced and quite nice :)

That systema one is wired for a buttstock battery i think. But yea it does look pretty good, alot more expensive than i thought to.

As for buying the parts and putting it together myself id rather not and just take the old one apart and learn from that and not break the new one as im putting it together.:)

The gearbox jammed again at the weekend. Does anyone reckon taking the gearbox apart and re greasing everything would do any good to it?
Is there any particular kind of greese i should use?

have you had it apart yet? did you find out why it locked up last time?
make sure all the shims and stuff are there and sitting properly and that you fit the gears right,. did you test the gearbox before refitting it? try its movement by installing all the gears and closing the casing without the piston in, then run the gears by hand and see if its smooth and check for play in the gears.,
I used a grease called "moly grease", its designed for use in CV joints and is very good for gears etc, if ya cant get that then try LM grease, you should be able to get them in motor factors and stuff.,

Yep i opened it up the first time it jammed, as i took of topcover i heard the gears un-tense. I didnt take it fully apart but it seemed to be fine. Put maybe 150 bb's through it after that and all was good til now. Ill have a closer look when i get that grease you mentioned, thanks.

you have to make sure theres no play in any of the gears before its put back together, if there is then they can come up off the teeth and jam up, thats where the shims come in, you have to use them to make the gears fit as tightly as possible without them binding,.

Could a faulty motor make a gearbox jam? Im just after puttin a new dboys gearbox in and the ****ing thing jammed as soon as the trigger was pulled.

depends on whats wrong with it, take it out an connect it to the battery to listen for any grinding or resistance in it. also check the pinion gear thats on the motor for any signs of wear on it due it being wrongly alligned,.,
