OK weird question. A bicycle is missing.

If you were a thief and wanted to steal a locked bicycle, would you also steal the lock when you got it off?

Or if both the bicycle and the lock is gone, is it more likely the lock wasnt secured to a solid object?

I'd take the lock even if I separated them. I'd move this thread to Conspiracy Theories. I'd convince you / Gardaí that there was never any bicycle.

I'd take the lock, there might be fingerprints on it. Or maybe semen, that's how they catch bad guys on CSI, and there's usually a lot of semen on my hands, best to take the lock just in case.

I'd leave the lock to mock the former owner.

    LOL!

Wait, was there actually a bike to begin with or is this all theoretical?

Or are you indeed looking for ideas as you may be plotting a midnight raid?

i had a bike robbed from me. they took the lock, but in this case it was irrelevant - the whole lock could have been covered in spunk and it wouldnt have made a scrap of a difference. because this was in Croydon - the cops there are the most useless bunch around and probably have quite a few murders and other serious stuff to deal with.

Pad locks are easy to open without a key so why not take it and sell it to some gommie.

You hadnt locked it to a nice bronze artwork or something similar and your bike went missing by way of association-scrap bronze very valuable these days?:)

really we're trying to determine whether the last person who used it had locked it correctly.

take the bike and put the lock on some other randomer's bike

It depends on the type of lock/chain. If you were able to seperate it in one piece, then yeah I'd probably keep it too, or if I had to cut it, I'd dump it. No point in having a broken one.

Leave the lock to make the bike owner think it's his fault for not locking it properly.
