Well one of the mods moved this thread to >Cable & Digital TV>Terrestrial for you. I'm sure you'll get a comprehensive answer here :)

If it doesn't have a VHF tuner it wont pick up all channels. digital though wont be a problem.

    Why the rollseyes Onikage?

Seriously? Last I checked, ntl is cable not terrestrial. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=54 is the cable forum.

That's not the OP's fault. It was moved here from Newbies & FAQ.

Many TV sets sold in the UK only cover UHF frequencies

Analouge cable TV is predominantly VHF

Also in many parts of Ireland RTE1 and RTE2 are transmitted on VHF frequencies (Terrestrial transmissions from TV3 TG4 and the UK channels are all on UHF)

If you need to recieve VHF channels on a UHF only TV there are converter units one can buy although in this day and age the cheapest solution would probably be to buy a cheap video cassette recorder (preferably with NICAM although its not essential) in the Republic (all models sold there should have VHF) and use it as a VHF tuner for your TV

Can a mod please move this thread to Cable / MMDS / IP, where it should be.

If your cable box is digital/MMDS, you can use scart.
If it comes over coax (no box), NTL/Chorus often mux the channels on VHF.
VHF is not commonly used in the UK.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_high_frequency#United_Kingdom

Thus, for many years many UK tv's did not work properly in Ireland.

However, a lot of modern tv's sold in the UK do include VHF tuners because:
    a) they are localised to Europe, not Ireland or UK
    b) its cheaper to make and ship one model of tv which can handle both frequencies than creating and managing two variations
    c) a lot of people order tv's from the uk (misco.co.uk, saverstore.com, etc.), have them shipped to Ireland and do not report problems
I am one of those people :)

So, modern tellys from the UK work in Ireland.

PS. Something occurred to me. If you go to the tuner settings and select auto scan you may get a choice of country's to choose from. Ireland should be on the list.

It's primarily about VHF /UHF tuners vs UFH only.

    Leave it in Terrestrial.

Analogue is past it's sell by data on cable and only the the SCART via Digital set box gives picture good enough for LCD/Plasma TV.
