Excel is spreadsheets, Access is databases. Which one are you looking for?

    SugarCRM: it's overkill.

(Excel is a spreadsheet, not a database.)

    http://www.openoffice.org/
    http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html (database)
    http://www.openoffice.org/product/calc.html (Spreadsheet like Excel)
    + more. Free.

Can I download base alone or have i to download all the office suite. Is it hard on memory ?

Actually,I had checked and had found it seemed you have to download the whole program 105 MB. Reason is it is for someone who does not know much about computers and would prefer the database part alone as they only want database, but got all since cannot get base as stand alone ;-)

Do you want to mailmerge the contacts or share them betweeen lots of people or do you just want to put your contacts on a list ?

I do not want to share them with others but will need to mailmerge them for letters being sent. I downloaded openoffice.org and it has a database but it may have too much. Basically want to have a list of contacts which can retrieve with say a surname or dob and to be able to mailmerge a sales letter to all - or some- of them

    Thanks everyone for response/suggestions

What about Windows Address Book (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Address Book)? I think it came with Internet Explorer 5.5 and later. There are quite a number of fields available, not just email and phone number. Thunderbird can be configured to use it.
