I thought all along this poor guy was shot with a handgun, its reported that he was shot with a "modified air pistol". How can a modified air pistol kill a person, if shot in the stomach. You can buy air pistols anywhere nowadays!!!

"Shu Shen took a bus to Kilkenny on 8 December last year. Armed with a modified air pistol and a knife, he walked into the post office at John's Green and got away with more than €13,000 in cash."

Did he actually die as a direct result of the gunshot though?

This is going to sound like a stupid question but..
How long is life in prison exactly? I mean does it actually mean "life" i.e. til you die, or is it maybe 20 years or so (like you hear sometimes)

It's not that difficult to make shooting device, all you need is a piece of pipe, a spring and a nail.

And if you have a bit of technical knowledge, it's not that hard to actually make a fully working revolver. You just have to know how. So I wouldn't make too much of the fact that it was a modified air pistol.

    Twelve years

"The length of time spent in custody by offenders serving life sentences can vary substantially. Of those prisoners serving life sentences who have been released, the average sentence served in prison is approximately twelve years. However, this is only an average and there are prisoners serving life sentences in Ireland who have spent in excess of thirty years in custody."

No, he died within an hour of being shot, but it was nothing to do with the gunshot

    From the Citizens Information site:
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/justice/criminal-law/criminal-trial/sentence
A mandatory sentence is one which must be imposed regardless of any other circumstances. In Ireland, murder is the only crime which carries a mandatory sentence. The sentence for murder is life imprisonment. A life sentence in Ireland lasts for life. However, as is the case in a number of countries, not all of the life sentence in Ireland is generally served in prison custody. The granting of temporary or early release of life sentenced prisoners is a feature of prison systems internationally and in Ireland.

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, in deciding on the release from prison of a life sentenced prisoner, will always consider the advice and recommendations of the Parole Board of Ireland. The Board, at present, initially reviews prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment after seven years have been served. Prisoners serving very long sentences, including life sentences, are normally reviewed on a number of occasions over a number of years before any substantial concessions would be recommended by the Board. The final decision as to whether a life sentenced prisoner is released rests solely with the Minister. The length of time spent in custody by offenders serving life sentences can vary substantially. Of those prisoners serving life sentences who have been released, the average sentence served in prison is approximately twelve years. However, this is only an average and there are prisoners serving life sentences in Ireland who have spent in excess of thirty years in custody.

Edit: Beaten to it by DonJose!
