Hi all, I'm looking for a 5 day skiing break (Mon-Fri if poss) in late Jan. I want it somewhere reasonably close. Anybody got any ideas if such a thing is possible? Many thanks

I don't know if it would be possible with a tour operator as any I've seen do Saturday to Saturday holidays, so maybe you'd have to organise it yourself. European airports that are near ski resorts are Lyon and Chambery in France, Geneva in Switzerland, Toulouse for ski resorts in Andorra and Salzburg in Austria. You'd have to organise transport from the airport to the resort and then when you get to the resort you'd have to organise renting your gear and buying your lift pass. And of course you would have to book your own accomodation. All of this is possible, but it would definitely be easier to go with a tour operator. Some are listed below.

You'll have to do a bit of DIY, but it's possible and gives you lots of options.

Assuming you don't want to spend too much time travelling and want cheap airports, then you could try Foppolo: fly to Bergamo and all the hotels in the village will arrange transport from and to your flight, as well as lift pass and arrange ski hire. The resort is small, and the links aren't always open, but the hotels are nice, it's not expensive and it has a lot of repeat visitors.

Or you could fly to Grenoble and get a local bus up the valley to Charmroouse, a very handy resort, with skiing suited to a mixed group, lots of easy runs at one side, and some tough blacks, including an Olympic downhill at the other side. We stayed in the local youth hostel, they stuffed us with food and we made the most of the cheap bar.

Fly to Lyon and there are ski buses which will bring you to resorts like Val d'Isere, Tignes, 3 Vallees etc. In January, it won't be difficult to get a hotel. If the resorts are full, check out the valley towns like Bourg St Maurice or Moutiers.

If you get flights to Turin, there are a lot of resorts in the area, and lots of transfers.

Fly to Zurich and you can get a train to Andermatt, perfect for intermediete/good skiers who want a bash at some challanging blacks and accessible off-piste. Hotels are surprisingly cheap.

A very flexible option is to fly to Paris with whoever is cheapest, and get an overnight train to the Alps. That means that just about anywhere in France and a few places in Switzerland are accessible. You save two nights hotel accommodation as well. Check out the French youth hostels, they really feed you, don't charge single supplements and arrange ski hire and lift passes, often lessons as well.
