Aardwolf is a free to play text based MUD. I just tried it out there quickly - telneting in via putty.
Seems nice and I'll like to get into it.
Just wondered if any of you guys tried this one before or if this is good as any place to try start messing with MUDs?

OMG! This is addictive... it's 02:37am and I have to go to work early in the morning. Friday at least - this weekend is booked!

I used to play MUDS a fair bit back in the early nineties , spent waay to much time in College playing Jedimud and Holomud. These were (if I remember correctly) varients on DikuMud code, so less interaction than on MUSHes etc and more of the "cast heal3 %tar" and "smight orc" etc.

I suppose as a plus side I learned to type fairly quickly , and how to create a boot disk that let me boot the Colleges 286's and telnet in automatically.Back then I always hoped that someone would come up with a combnation of a Doom style 32 enviroment and a MUD , and eventually they did.Hence me ending up playing WoW years later (having deliberately avoided EverQuest)

Yep, it does lead to other things - Wow for an instantance! I bought the standard classic version today for xmas! That's after telling brother to send it back to the shop last xmas - I do change my mind. But I am enjoying Aardwolf so much - it insane. It's a bit like Multi-player Zork in some respects since I get these lovely descriptions in each room: - I mean this is descriptive!
    look <return>
    Sanctuary
As you enter this room through the marble archway you are
met by the grand devotional chamber of the temple. After
being blessed by the priestess in the devotional nave, and
relaxing in the warmth of the hospitum, you could not have
fathomed there would be an even more spectacular chamber
    dedicated to our faith.

Before you stands a magnificent likeness of the Nameless One.
His cloak seems to float in the breeze as He smiles over His
followers. His intense strength, leadership, and honor seem
to resonate in the depths of His eyes. You feel as if the
weight of past battles have been lifted from your shoulders
as you stand in His presence.

A warm glow enhances your vision of the room as
you glance at the intricate golden accents on the holy water
basin, the marble scripture of the Crusader vow to help those
in need, and the mahogany pews that offer a place to reflect
on all the blessings the Nameless One has given us.
Adorning the walls are hand-woven tapestries, boasting
impressive designs of past Crusader knights in battle.
They seem to shimmer and glow as the breeze, coupled with
the warm sunlight cascading from the windows, gently tossles
them. Hand-dipped candles burn lazily about the room.
Their flames flickering, but never waning with each whisper
of the breeze. The sights, smells, and atmosphere seem to
draw on an inner peace within you.

In the Nave you sought insight with the priestess, but here in
the sanctuary is where it all comes together. You need no guidance
when reflecting here. This room offers you a chance to commune with
the Nameless One. No distractions, no rules on how to pray, no one
but you and the Namless One. Listen carefully...for whenever you are
in need, He speaks only to you.

    [Exits: south]
[*] Have your voice heard. The Nameless One is here.

I'm only starting out and if you type domains - I see only 1 entry from Ireland. If anyone is interested let me know if you decide to telnet in (or use AL Client or zmud). I'm still walking around the start in the main city Aylor
    telnet aardmud.org
    port 4000

The stats is are interesting - and show that I netted 15 hours already. Totally free of course.

To save you time learning - here's what I brushed up on at the moment - use these commands and hop on in. My login is Westan. Just let me know a time when you plan to get in and I'll log on.

btw, type channels to see the list of channels. And turn most of them off (type the name of one) - easier on the volume of info coming in on the screen.

I've been giving this the odd try every now and then (char=thyrian) it's interesting although I managed to bugger up the newbie school bit and therefore didnt get the garbage can/portal thing.
I've also (in a fit of nostalgia) started playing holomud again :
    coldtech.com 7773

the pluses are its rather unusual levelling system (i.e. you pick when you want to level , and theres no class structure , you can use xp to buy 2 or 3 skills each level) , and the holodeck method it uses to access areas means theres not as much need to memorise/alias speedruns to get to areas.
the downside is though that theres practially no one playing it!

Oh oh please tell. When I completed mudschool I had the graduation ring and diploma in my posession. I did go down to basement and take on a few extra monsters - but the highlight was taking on the Green dragon and the Challenger.

managed to somehow go up when I was trying to find the combatant ..which took me to aylar.couldnt for the life of me find my way back ..and managed to hit level 6 (which means you cant go back to mudschool),I remember it saying something about looking for a garbage can , which lets you recall without using movement points??

Oh right. When you get to Aylor - and say if you get lost... then type recall. It bring you back to the spot where you start in Aylor - just hit u to go upstair back to Mudschool - thats it. That catch me as well - First time I did that.
