Right i do relise its a bit early and there is a still months to go but given that after watching [well more flicking back from BBC] RTE's coverage of the Wales Bokke match they let Hook show his XV and was wondering what kinda of XV people want.

I shall start and then you can flame me for it ^^

.15 G. Murphy [Dempsey to come on after 50 mins]
    .14 Rob Carney
    .13 O'Driscoll
    .12 Darcy
    .11 R. Karney
    .10 O'Gara
    .9 Reddan
    .8Heaslip
    .7 Jennings
    .6 Quinlan
.5 O'Connell [thats hoping that his back injury isnt serious and that is form will be okay coming out from this injury]
    .4 Cullen
    .3 Horan
    .2 Flannery
.1 Buckley [We might as well start giving him some International experience since he will be replacing the bull

Hmmm, may as well lose the run of myself here...

    .15 Rob Kearney
    .14 Shane Horgan
    .13 O'Driscoll
    .12 D'Arcy
    .11 Ian Dowling
    .10 O'Gara
    .9 Reddan

    .8 Heaslip
    .7 Jennings
    .6 Quinlan
    .5 Bob Casey
    .4 Leo Cullen
    .3 Buckley
    .2 Jackman
    .1 Stephen Knoop

    16. Cian Healy
    17. Trevor Hogan
    18. Johnno Sexton
    19. Denis Hurley
    20. Luke Fitzgerald
    21. Donnacha Ryan
    22. Cillian Willis

    :)

I'd just be happy if we blooded at least 1 new cap in the 5 games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,581 ✭✭✭uberwolf

I think we should be moving towards a scenario where you're alternating players between the games in every position.

My squad would be a look towards 2011.

    Hence

    15. Kearney / Duffy
    14. Horgan / Brown (if only this chap could stay fit!)
    13. O'Driscoll / Lewis
    12. D'Arcy / Murphy?
    11. Luke / Dowling
    10. O'Gara / Sexton (Felipe if he naturalises ;) )
    9. Reddan / Willis
    8. Heaslip / Leamy
    7. Jennings /
    6. Keogh /
    5. Hogan / O'Callaghan
    4. O'Connell / Cullen
    3. Buckley /
    2. Flannery /
    1. / Knoop

I have a few reservations with the above
Cillian Willis? struggling to reach the standard for Heino, 6N could hammer his confidence. But as a long term prospect he needs to be blooded.

You'd have to give Luuuuke more time as well, his unpopularity within the Leinster squad means he's not being given the ball when he may otherwise get it. He only seems to get the ball on the counter, and I know he's McAllister II as far as the squad are concerned. Immensely talented despite that, and not out of place in the current Leinster backline which as high a compliment as can be paid

Now comparing him to McAllister seems a bit off to me. Ill be honest with you iv seen very little him and when i did i saw little of him on the pitch. In all honestly what makes you believe he is that good? Not trying sound a bit angry at you but i just dont see what the hype is about Luke to be honest he isnt the most stand out player say Keith Earls is for Munsters but shares the same problem as him with getting game time. Id probably have a different opinion of him if he had of played in the Churchill Cup though since we could have measured his standards

Eh you all seem to be forgetting Eddie O'Sullivan is still in charge and the squad is going to look exactly like this:

    15 - Girvan Dempsey
    14 - Andrew Trimble
    13 - Brian O'Driscoll Captain
    12 - Gordon D'Arcy
    11 - Denis Hickie
    10 - Ronan O'Gara
    9 - Peter Stringer
    1 - Marcus Horan
    2 - Rory Best
    3 - John Hayes
    4 - Donncha O'Callaghan
    5 - Paul O'Connell
    6 - Simon Easterby
    7 - David Wallace
    8 - Denis Leamy

    Well maybe not Hickie
    We can still dream though...

*tear* and too think we will face a French side that will attack now, a English side with a probably new bank line to challenge us aswell as a better outhalf [Given if Cipriani gets the job which i think he will]. A Scot side we have struggled to beat now on occasions. All is left is a all over the shop Wales and Italy side. Oh well

He has a precious capacity to float through a defensive line when on the counter, something Connaught can testify to!

Yeaahhh but thats Connaught and i remember him doing it once rather the whole match. Has he EVER been seriously tested by any decent team?

you said it yourself ,you havent seen alot of him,he aint gona be good as a winger no matter how many times cheika plays him there,oh and the fact no one will pass to him,he would flourish at 13,we arent gona win the six nations,so why not blood some new talent, healy, kearney and fitzgerald, its not as if there gona get killed if they come on for the last 25-30 mins, and we arent gona mount a challenge so why not

The one player that showed up in France, Dempsey, is dropped by the majority of you. He should be the first name on the team sheet.. Brian Carney has yet to live up to the hype, but his differently spelt namesake, Rob should be given a start.. I also switching centres, for different reasons but I think freeing up Darcy could be a revelation

My team (and remember, I won the Boards WC prediction game)

    15:Dempsey
    14:Horgan
    13:D'arcy (Yes, I know)
    12:O'Driscoll (Yes, I know too)
    11:Kearney
    10:O'Gara
    09:Redden
    08:Heaslip
    07:N Best (Rotate with Wallace)
    06:Quinlan
    05:O'Connell
    04:O'kelly
    03:Hayes
    02:Jackman
    01:Buckley

I would have G Murphy, B Murphy, Knoop, Dowling and O'Callaghan somewhere near the first team too

We'll have to see what happens tonight, but you're dead right about the battles of Flannery v Jackman, Heaslip v Leamy & Jennings v Wallace.

The reason I obmitted Dempsey is because he's currently injured, and Kearney will take his place at Leinster, so it's a better idea to have someone who's played with that backline for a few months, than shoehorn in Girv who's coming back from injury (or something)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,681 ✭✭✭✭P_1

    Personally I'd go with:

    15 - G. Dempsy (G. Murphy on at 50 as impact)
    14 - S. Horgan
    13 - G. D'arcy (12-13 axis getting stale)
    12 - B. O'Driscoll
    11 - R. Kearney
    10 - R. O'Gara
    9 - E. Reddan

    8 - J. Heaslip
    7 - S. Jennings
    6 - A Quinlan
    5 - P. O'Connoll
    4 - M. O'Kelly
    3 - J. Hayes (T. Buckley on as impact)
    2 - J. Flannery
    1 - M. Horan

    Subs:
    G. Murphy
    J. Sexton
    P. Stringer
    D. O'Callghan
    T. Buckley
    B. Jackman
    D. Leamey

    12 - G. D'arcy
    11 - B. Carney
    10 - R. O'Gara
    9 - E. Reddan

    8 - J. Heaslip
    7 - S. Jennings
    6 - D. Leamy
    5 - P. O'Connoll
    4 - D. O'Callaghan
    3 - J. Hayes (T. Buckley on as impact)
    2 - J. Flannery
    1 - M. Horan

    Waterboy : Paddy Wallace

Based on current injuries, my 22 would be:

    15 Duffy
    14 Horgan
    13 O'Driscoll (c)
    12 d'Arcy
    11 Murphy
    10 O'Gara
    9 Stringer

    1 Horan
    2 Flannery
    3 Hayes
    4 O'Callaghan
    5 O'Kelly
    6 Jennings
    7 Wallace
    8 Leamy

Subs: Best, Buckley, Cullen, Heaslip/Best, Reddan, Wallace, Carney

Not too shabby, playing well this season and nearly there: Trimble, Kearney, Gleeson, O'Connor, Jackman

Fitzgerald is barely ready for ERC level, never mind International. Hasn't the head for it yet.

Im not a huge Jackman fan myself he isnt international standard to be honest but many people would be picking him on form which in fairness he deserves because he is standing out more then Flannery or Best is in the loose and in tight which those two are supposed to outclass him. But id still have Flannery starting ahead just because i think Flannery is a better all rounder, motivator etc.

Again Heaslip has been standing out more the Leamy. His overall work rate is much more then Leamy's at the mo. I think Leamy has fallen into the Horan/Doc trap of been goddamn lazy because he knows he wont loose his place. Id have Heaslip ahead of him in the 6N as he has proven very strong at the back of the scrum and we could come under pressure this 6N.

Ehh Wallace vs Jennings really thats the one im watching out for tonight. I still think Wallace is 6 1/2 he isnt a specialists 7 which i do think every team needs.

One funny thing about tonight though is that for the sake of Ireland we want Leinsters backline destroying Munsters [which should be a test] and Munster need to destroy Leinster's pack.

All and all hopefully alot of questions will be answered tonight.

Good backrow that. Effectively two blindsides, two breakaways and two no.8s (if Heaslip is 19).

I'm with you on that Dave -- the WC campaign has lost my interest in the game , kicking a ball with son, and watching him play youth rugby , is far more interesting than watching Eddie losing the plot with the golden generation.

Yes indeed, this six nations this year must be all about squad/player development and tactical change. We need to fundamentally alter the way we play rugby as a country. Give key play makers their head and let them play whats in front of them, we've got experience enough through the spine of any squad permutation to allow this to happen.

End the control freakery and get the game plans in order, i.e. a plan A, B, C with players confident and intelligent enough to mix and match...Oh and please, please, please, strict selection on form, not reputation (some bloody chance.....)

i don't know if it's possible to name a XV as such. What i would do is identify 30 odd players(preferably who will all still be around in 2011), and gradually drop the players who won't be around in 2011.

    Props
    Horan
    Hayes
    Healy
    Buckley
Maybe this 6N start the first 2 but blood the other 2 for following season

    Hookers
    Flannery
    Jackman

    Second Rows
    POC
    DOC
    Caldwell
    Toner
POC+DOC to start with the others as understudies

    Back Rows
    Best
    Quinlan
    Wallace
    Jennings
    Heaslip
    Leamy

    Scrum Halves
    Reddan
    Boss
As it stands they would be my top 2 for WC2011

    Fly Halves
    O'Gara
    Sexton
in 2 years i'd like to see Sexton first choice 10 as ROG gets on, i'd like to see ROG the man to bring on after an hour at the WC to see out+control a game

    Centres
    D'arcy
    BOD
    Trimble
    Barry Murphy
Please can we have an alternative 12/13 if its needed in the future and at the world cup

    Wingers
    Fitzgerald
    Kearney
    Horgan
    Dowling

    Full Backs
    Geordan Murphy
Johne Murphy (haven't heard much of him in the media here, but having watched a few Tigers matches, 2nd highest scorer there, I think he's worth developing, he has a lot of potential)

Lads just wondering what are people's views on Bob Casey? He plays for London Irish at 2nd and himself and Nick Kennedy so far are the most succesfull second row in the premiership and in Europe. Anyone else think he's well dew some game time for us??? Captaining LI at the moment and doing a fine job i think he;s our man when looking for a second row

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭LeeroyJones

yes im a big fan of Casey, have called for his selection for a while now especially prior to the WC, didn't actually put him in the list of players above(just feel hes 29 now and by 2011 he's 33-not far too old mind you)
