Apologies if this has come up before, I couldn't find it.

I was wondering how other guitar players (newer I suppose) deal with sore fretting fingers, any advice?

I sometimes use superglue, I heard it was at some point intended as war-time field dressing. It's more preventative really.

    What do you do?

just stick with it - they will get better

i remember using candle wax years ago
    cant remeber if it worked,

light a candle, let the wax melt, blow it out
and dip your finger tips in it

used to play hours everyday, then when they hurt like hell take a break for a day and back to it the next day. Now they are rock hard

    Stick with it man...

After 14 years of playing, I have ended up with callouses on the ends of my playing fingers which resemble little "pads"...

Seriously, enjoy the pain, its worth it...

Stick with it, also try not to play straight after having a shower or washing your hands because the water and soap can kind of soften up your fingers.

Just keep with it, it's worth it in the end (plus you'll be able to push pins into your finger tips without it hurting :), not that I'd recommend it)

Thanks for the advice. I suspected the best thing probably would be stick-it-out, doublehardbast*rd style

Stick at it, if they feel real raw take a days rest. You'll eventually build up callouses on your fingertips. I don't think I have any fingertips left...hahaha then again I play bass. :)

    +1

And you're right about superglue BTW.

Sorry forgot to mention it earlier, but steer clear of super glue. If it gets into your blood stream its bad, you can get blood poisoning from it.

fourmations: I just tried the candle wax thing, and while the wax tends to crumble off, I think the very act of sticking one's fingers into hot, molten pain sort of scalds the finger tips into condition. Genius.

Joe Robot: Blood poisoning? heh heh, imagine explaining that to the intern doctors at A&E.

Also, isn't there a trick people do with sand? Anyone?

anyway regardless of the fact that the superglue could be detrimental to your health, its also is kinda cheating also constantly putting superglue on your fingers is kinda impractical

Like anything relating to guitar, there are no short cuts, or tricks that'll make you advance more. Just stick with it, and your fingers will toughen up a bit.

Couldn't have said it better myself Karl! :)
