I just called Sky to upgrade to Sky+ and the girl said you still need a phoneline. I asked her if she was sure this restriction still applied and she said yes.

I thought the phone line required thing was abolished?
    Anyone know?

Definitely don't need a phoneline anymore installation is €35 extra without a phone line.

Is this the only sky box in the house? If so, then you don't need a phone line but you are required to pay 37.50 once off extra.

    Yeah it's a standalone box.
I was going to maybe get the guy to do a fixer to have my current box pick up the FTA channels in another room.

Anyone have it in writing that you dont need a phone line for a standalone box coz this girl was adamant I could not get Sky+?

    Here you go :)
One box in the building whether it's sky or sky+ does not require a phone line.

I was checking it out for a family member recently (in her 60s) and they said it was needed for all the add ons, (gambling, etc). I said she did not need it and they then said it was needed for set up and updates. I argued this out with them and eventually they said it was just needed. I asked them to waive it as she was a pensioner and they did think about it and then came back and said no!

Bad and all as NTL are (and boy are they bad) we went for them instead

Ask any sky engineer. The regulation was changed in November, no phone line is required. I've repeated myself three times, thats enough.

It's funny (and frustrating) how Sky don't actually inform their employees about this. They must not want the extra business, bloody idiots.

It's exactly because they DO want extra business. With a phone line connected, you're more likely to order a box-office movie, use their e-mail, play games etc etc.
Sky do seem to be guilty of not telling their sales staff about new product ranges though.

I can confirm a phone line is no longer a requirement - I'm an existing (regular) Sky subscriber, haven't had a phone line in years. I called last Friday, and got upgraded to Sky +, no phone line required, installation happened today. I called this number for installation: 0818719819.
