I am looking for a "clever" xml parser perhaps with a gui that I can manipulate the data.

Maybe turn some fields on or off, output to csv and perhaps do this through a gui

    Preferably free software as well.

    Thanks

I have used this in the past, maybe very useful.

Can't think of any tools really, but they do exist.

Standards wise, if you learn XPath and XSL you'd be able to do alot of things! If you program, you can write XPath statements to extract data and such, quite handy. Using the DOM then you can manipulate the values.

As for tools, I think the best around (have used myself) is the non-free oXygen XML editor. Open source alternatives exist, give 'em a go.

I don't really find myself using complicated tools to work with XML, I'm going to be doing custom programming for repetitive use and if making XML documents, probably a plain-text editor unless it is very messy.

I hope that wasn't all gobbleygook to ya.

I used Altova's XMLSpy before. It might be what you're after

Edit: Sorry just realised you're after free and this is quite pricey

XMLSpy is the one I have used too and found very useful. There is a free notepad xml editor from microsoft that I haven't used but may be worth a look
