Tastes Changing

So, as the years roll on, the hair gets lighter and the trouser sizes get bigger, i've noticed my tastes changing.
Sunday nite in the pub and i felt an urge for a pint of Smithwicks, normally i'd start with a few pints of cider or Heineken and end up on shorts. but for some reason ale was what i craved and stayed on all nite. It went down a treat and my fridge has already swollen with more in anticipation for the next evening off.

I don't think my tastes have really changed over the years, so much as they've expanded.

For example, I've been listening to more Jazz in the last couple of years. My tastes haven't changed, so it's not a case of Jazz replacing Metal or something, but after discovering some new things, I appreciate a lot of Jazz as well as other stuff I'd been listening to for years.

With booze though, there were a few things I did drink when I was but a young whipper snapper that I wouldn't touch now, mainly cider, snakebite, and some very unpleasant beers. But another example of the whole tastes expanding thing, I've grown a steady appreciation for Whiskey over the years.

Just let it go I say, if you find yourself enjoying something new, add it to the cannon of your enjoyment. ;)

Senna - You started off OK on the beer topic, but it went downhill from there until it finally ended up as the dregs lying in a driptray of angst.

Karl - Had your concern been changing taste in Jazz-mags & the virtues of 'Asian Babes' over 'Shaved Sluts' I would have thought - "Mmm... A topic worthy of BG&RH." (The whiskey appreciation is slightly redeeming. ;))

But seriously lads - these need to be in PI...

I started off on Bulmers when I was a nipper.

One night in a shed with 12 cans and a washing machine, and the subsequent spinnies, put paid to that for a while.

The I moved on to bud, to my eternal shame.

The on to Miller, then Heino. (I hate the name "Ken", I really do )

But, once again, I was put off Heino after a 24 pack of out of date cans.

    Then onto Arthur's.

Moved to Aus then, drank all sorts over there.

back to Ireland, and Becks Vier is my lager of choice, or large bottles of guinness.

I started off with Heineken and other largers when I was in my teens. Before long though my tastes had turned to cider and Bulmers was my drink of choice. After a few years of that, I couldn't tolerate the taste of it any more and I went back to Heineken.

I started my drinking days on Heineken. I switched to Guinness for a while, but it didn't last long and I went back to Heineken for a few years. Then one day I had a grá fro a Guinness and have never looked back and probably never will. I still use Heineken as a back up when I'm in establishments where the Uncle Arthur is muck but I never return to establishments that force me to drink Heineken.

Like Karl, I'm also developing a taste for whiskey. In my novice stages, I actually prefer Scotch whiskey - but in a few years who knows where that will go......

My first alcoholic experience was a six pack of Harp (the old style, stubby half-pint bottles). What was I thinking?

My first regular tipple was Carlsberg, and then Fosters became widely available (would have been late 80s I reckon) and I switched to that. Gradually Fosters vanished and I switched back to Carlsberg, but in the meantime Guinness had taken over brewing it from Murphy's and it had a completely different taste. It was truly vile so I switched to Heineken and that's what I drink in pubs now, with the occasional pint of Guinness if I'm in a decent pub. However, at some stage I develope an appreciation for the more "exotic" beers, as they would have been back in the early to mid-90s, and it would never even cross my mind to buy Heineken for home consumption. I generally pick up a selection of anything that looks interesting, but my particular favourite is Staropramen. i also developed a taste for fine bourbon and have several bottles that are unavailable in Ireland in my possession.

Started on Guinness, then changed to Heineken, less farts the next morning.

Quite fond of a decent vino. Avoiding whiskey except for special occasions, used to be a big fan but semi conscious of whats left of my liver at this stage...:p

I edited the first post to cut some down on some of the clutter:p

Thinking back on all the 'usuals' I've had, I've certainly worked my way through most varieties of drink. But the one i stuck with the longest was Bulmers, maybe 4-6 pints, followed by a humongous amount of Southern Comfort and red lemonade, guaranteed to be a good nite out with none of the hangover in the morning. Still haven't worked my way onto the true whiskeys, but at least its something to look forward to.:D

Just as for another change tonight i ordered the Beck on draft, that my local has just got in, now i wont say its bad, but if you like the taste of SWEAT, then certainly order it.

    That's better.

I started on Harp myself, then Heino & Furstenburg.
Dallied briefly with the beer that must not be named.
    Moved swiftly on...
For quite a number of years now I stick to Guinness in Winter & Bulmers in summer.

With the odd whiskey thrown in for good measure.

When I first started, it was flagons of cider, sometimes mixed with the dreaded Scotsmac ( a mix of red wine & whisky  )

Then a few years on beer before discovering the limitless pleasure of Guinness.

Drop of Scottish single malt when the mood takes me, and it often does.

Thought it should be the other way round as Heineken has more gas than Guinness.

Anyway, started off on Harp, then Smithwicks and now Guinness. Used to drink vodka but can't stand the stuff now. Drink Black Bush instead.

Pighead started off drinking Harp way back in the early 90's. Then as time moved on and Pigheads taste buds got more refined............. nothing changed at all.

Still drink Harp to this day and by God's good grace shall be drinking it til the day the Grim Reaper comes a knocking.

    Harp Forever.

Well there's a coincidence, fair to you Piggie for admitting you drink Harp.

Some people would rather admit to drinking dog's piss.

I like it and drink it,nice and fresh and lively, and not the oily tastes of 'Ken and the like.

I had a big curry and a six pack the other night and she came out like a holtl of otters into the pan next day.

    Harp forever.

I with you on this one Pighead. Nothing like a nice pint of Harp out of Corbetts.

Don't mind Heineken or Smithwicks either, and love a pint of Guinness from a decent pub.

Ah, there's a whole journey of discovery to be made there!

I'll try to help you along that road if you need it, brother.

Started with Bulmers ... still on Bulmers. Dont get me wrong I've tried some crazy stuff along the way but the "apple juice" is a constant.

What can I say to that?? sorry I've nothing to say but that really made me laugh.

Since my drinking habits has been like my wimmin, I've had too many to chart them all.

I started on Bulmers as well and im still drinking it. Nothing beats a cold large bottle of Bulmers on a hot summers day. However due to my growing addiction to my local casino i been forced to start drinking bottle of Heineken to keep growing my precious beer belly.

Good stuff - I just finished my bottle of cask strength single malt Scotch - distilled in 1987 and bottled in 2005 so that's 18 years, not to mention the fact that it's 58.3%. It was tasty stuff. I bought it at the Glendronach distillery in Scotland last year. I'll have to book the ferry to Stranraer sometime soon......

DesF - you would have been better for it. ;)

Tooheys New - For years and years.

Last few years though my tastes have definately taken a trun towards the pale and amber beers (Coopers, Squire, Little Creatures etc).

I don't generally drink shorts as a rule (I am silly enough), though if I am venturing onto the spirits it has always been Bundy, dry and lime.

While living in Eire, I generally consumed Guinness.

If we were out getting twisted, it would be Carlsberg with Pernod & Squash to chase. :)

Good name for a thread 'tastes changing' DesF, I think you just haven't drunk enough of it ;)

New is a heaven send when placed against VB, XXXX or Melbourne Bitter.

Note: Queenslanders only call it XXXX because they can't spell ****.

Amen to that brother. VB is absolutely vile. Pure Blonde, Toohey's Extra Dry, Carlton Draught, Carlton Cold and WA's own Swan Draught are all top beers.

Like many a young Dub I was originally a cider drinker. Still enjoy the odd Bulmers or Strongbow on a warm day like today.

In Ireland I'm a Guinness or Carlsberg man. Took a good while to get a taste for the black stuff but now it's beautiful. Like the odd Stella or Corona. Can't drink that Bud sh1te though.

Stout is the man's drink and the missus is proud i drink it! :D

When i was younger, i had tastes for all sorts of lager and guinness didn't really feature at all.
Now, a few years wiser in my early 30's, i cherish the lovely taste rather than knock back any p1ss to get locked. If it's not the stout, i go for ale with the odd bulmers at times and always finish that pint!

Certain folk(lets say the weaklin bloke types) say stout is too 'heavy' for the stomach:eek: and can't handle it, but that ain't a problem once your belly gets used to it :)

Stout filters out the boys from the real men :D
