Lied about salary in job interview...

Hi I need some advice..., I recently left my job as I was being severely underpaid and it was a terrible company to work for. During an interview I said I still worked in my old job as I thought it would look bad to have left without another job to go to. I also said I earned 8k more than I did, as thats how much that kind of a role would usually get.

The interview went well, so they have offered me the job matching that salary, I am now worried that they will see on my P45 I left three weeks earlier than I said and that I didn't earn as much as I had said. Will this matter? ...

Give your P45 directly to the accounts department, or ring revenue yourself to get your tax figures and give them (without a P45) to the accounts people.

The accounts people do not need a P45. You can arrange the tax details for them or they can ring the revenue office themselves.

If it's a large company the accounts people will have no idea your boss thinks you were on 8k more in your previous job.

of course if you go to such lengths to avoid giving your P45 in they will know something was up with what you said your salary was, I'd just hand it in and say nothing. if it comes up say you get a bit end of year bonus that you were counting as part of your salary.

Well its a small enough office and the guy from HR was in on the interview too... You mentioned I could get the tax figures myself for them... do you mean my PRSI number that kinda of thing? Will they need to know how much tax, salary etc I have been paid so far this year?

    Thanks!

Youve only four weeks left till the end of the year. YOu dont need to hand in a p45 from 2008 as they dont need the details.

Just contact the revenue and get them to send out your tax credits for now and you new tax credits will be issued in 08 without them having seen your p45!!

I'm due to start monday week...so do you mean, i won't have to give a P45 at all? And if I ask for my tax credits to be sent out that will be enough?

    Thanks!

YOu maybe taxed on a week1 basis, but your old job should have sent in a copy of your p45 and there fore the tax office should have details of what is earned..

    Ring tax office next week

    Have you pps no
Company registration no (Ask Payroll for it)

check www.revenue.ie for your phone no for paye queries this depends on what area you are working.

Anyhow ring them up and tell them you have changed jobs and need a new tax credit certificate. You will be on a week 1 basis until they get the p45 off your last employer.

This should be ok for last four weeks of year, Revenue receive your p60's at end of year from jobs you've worked if you are due a refund you can get it.
then new tax credits are sent out in early jan 2008, no need for p45.

personally, I'd hand it in and say nothing. Looks more obvious that something is amiss if you don't hand in P45.
If they questioned it....which is unlikely then tell them you were paying extra money in to pension(as only taxable pay shows on P45). They'll have to accept that as they ain't going to look for bank or pension statements to prove it!!
Not sure what to say if the questioned your end date from previous job though..I'd have to think about that one!!

Edit: Although since you will be starting job with only 3 weeks left in year you could just bluff and say that you are still awaiting P45 to be sent to you(previous payroll staff on holidays or something!). Your practically in to christmas and payroll will be too busy getting ther year end out of the way than to care about a late P45. Employer will receive new tax details in early Jan and that will be that

If anybody asks about it just say you were off sick for a while getting an operation or something and thats why your P45 is not correct.;)

I already got my p45 from my last job, so I presume the revenue has got a copy of it too... so if I ring the revenue and ask them for a tax credit certificate, and because it is so close to the new year are you saying that my new employers may not need my p45?

No, they wont need it, I work in wages 95 staff, a lot of coming and going. Once they get your tax credit certificate they wont miss your p45.

You'll be fine. Good luck in the job. Enjoy!!

They'll never ask, even if your boss does, he probably would expect you to lie about your salary.

IF they do ask, just add in expenses like health insurance, pension, parking, laptop, phone, gym, accommodation allowance, bonus, mileage, clothes allowance, you could even end up telling them you took a pay cut to work there.

I doubt you'll be in bother. They wouldn't have offered you the money if they didn't think you were worth it. HR people know that people tell white lies about these things.

Incidentally, I was asked recently how much I was getting paid in my last job. My answer was "It's irrelevant, I was underpaid". I got the job and the salary I asked for.

My only worry about this is that most accounts people don't have a clue what they're doing, so even when the new tax credits arrive they might still want a P45 before they take the OP off emergency tax.

Sounds nuts, but it happened to me. I worked in accounts myself for about a year and it amazed me how the "experienced" accounts people I worked with couldn't grasp the basics. For example, they thought if a P45 wasn't done on the "special paper" (the 3 or 4 sheets) then it was invalid. I would try to explain it was the figures that were important rather than the paper, but they couldn't grasp it...

So basically if I were the OP I would be prepared for messiness...

    Hey OP.

When a new employer recieves a P45 there is a section they need to post into the revenue ... but ... you can filll the details and post this in yourself. You just need the employer registered number. This is perfectly allowable and i believe it even says that on the P45, someting like 'if you do not wish your employer to see your salary details post this to the revenue ...' that was on the old style ones anyway. I don't have one to had but have a read of yours or maybe someone knows the exact wording?

Then payroll well get the tax credits through to their system and its all good. if they ask you could just say that someone told you this was the way you were supposed to do it.

to find out where to post it, go to the revenue site - contact locator - type in the employer number and it'll give you the address.

Or just give it to them, I doubt they will even pay any heed to the figures!!

    Enjoy the new job.
