The actual disk in it is gonna be one of the major brands (Seagate, WD, Hitachi or Samsung) and there's nothing particularly dodgy about any of them these days, however judging by the description ("ATA/100" and "8MB cache") it may be an old model (could be incorrect info, and being 500GB it can't be too old). The only thing that could be truly crappy is the USB controller, but it's probably ok.

My local Tesco has a few 500 gig Philips for €99. Might be worth checking your own Tesco if you miss out in Lidl.

just in PC world yesterday and they have some suprisely good prices on large reliable brand external drives too.I don't think 109 euro for the targa is that great of a deal:rolleyes:....so i wouldn't necessarily be queuing up to grab one.Does anyone know if the Targa is USB powered?I have an old WD 160 that needs power supply and the new ones are mostly USB powered which is a definate plus for me....:)

That's not really true - only the small ones which use 2.5" laptop HDDs are generally USB-powered. The externals using normal 3.5" drives usually require external power supplies. Of course the smaller ones are more expensive and you're limited with capacity - they don't really go much higher than 200GB right now.

Get the Seagate one off Komplett. It's same size, cheaper and a better brand.

well I decided to give the TARGA a go ..... 109.99 euro

Arrived at LIDL's 7.30am .... first in que ..... the Bin under the HD sign was empty .... no discs

This was going to be a bad shopping expedition ..... :(

Oh no it wasn't ..... had to ask at checkout and HD's passed out to customers from the office .... :)

Seems very good to me ...... simple Plug and play .... and this gives me 6 times the disc space on my PC ....

So time will tell but it's looking good ......

I'm working on the basis that LIDL have something like 4,000 stores around Europe ..... every one selling a 100 or 200 or maybe even more of "Special sales items" each week .... items like the HD ..... most of it under long warranties in most cases (3 years typical) ......

I have no doubt that if the quality level wasn't there, they would be in big trouble very quickly .....

    I shop in Maplins too ..... :)
