download the 1.1.1 firmware from apple, http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw

connect ipod to itunes and then alt-click (on mac, ctrl-click on windows) on the restore button.

then select the ipod touch firmware 1.1.1 from your computer. this will take a while and you may get an error message.. just keep doing it, i had to do twice.

then you'll have firmware 1.1.1 on the ipod so then just go to www.jailbreakme.com and you're sorted!

it also works for iphones, but there isnt a sim unlock yet so if you do that you'll be stuck with no phone features..

PS, this will RESTORE the firmware on your iPod... aka Erases everything

Answer all there, courtesy of the Mac forum :D
    Best of luck with it

Just a quick question on Jailbreak. I have managed to do this to my itouch. Is it possible (if one wanted to ) to upgrade back up to 1.1.2 or later versions when they come out and keep their touch "jailbroken"? If so do you just upgrade as normal through itunes?

Also what jailbreak apps do people recommend? There are so many!

I wouldnt mind being able to change the order of the icons on my touch - i presume one of the customise apps will allow me to do this?

    Cheers

yeah you can upgrade to 1.1.2 but it's tricky enough and as far as i've seen not really worth it yet. I might upgrade eventually when apple's updates actually contain useful things!

Customise.app allows you to rearrange the order of your apps just download it from Installer

As for which apps to get, there are loads and as with anything like this some great and some just awful!
I've got the iPhone apps(Mail, Weather, Stocks, Notes, Maps) which are all really useful and then i got Customise, Summerboard (allows you to change your background and icons), Sketches, GBA emulator, Sudoku and Wallpaper.
Really the best way to decide what you want is just download everything and see if you like it!

I jailbroke mine, ran the installer, from there install oktoup. After that you can upgrade through iTunes to 1.1.2 (dont restore). Then you have to download Jailbreak 1.1.2 and run the jar file on your machine in order to re-activate/re-install JB on the upgraded touch.

Cheers - I think i'll leave it on 1.1.1 for the moment

Sorry to drag up an old thread;)

Now I have 1.1.2 on my iTouch. So to get 3rd party apps like Google maps I need to:
    • Downgrade to 1.1.1
    • Do the jailbreakme.com thing
    • Upgrade to 1.1.2
    • And run jailbreak 1.1.2

    Is that right?

yeah that's it alright, just remember to install BSD Subsystem and Oktoprep before you upgrade.

I have been trying to jailbreak for a week now. I have managed to downgrade to firmware 1.1.1 and install okotoprep but when I try to install BSD subsystem it just times out. I know it is very large in comparison but I have left it running overnight and I still just get a download error. A couple of times the progress bar has gone across 50% really quickly but then just freezes no matter how long I leave it. I have the BT 2mb package and I put the itouch right next to the wireless router. Has anyone else had any similar problems and found a solution.

    Thanks

    Dave

BSD shouldn't take anymore than 10 minutes, it's only 6.6MB! There might be something wrong with the package itself. Have a look around some oof the forums mentioned above and see if there's anything about an updated version of it.
