An american ps3 would be able to play games bought here but not blu-ray movies bought here.It also would'nt be able to play dvds bought here. Same story with ps2 games if its a 60gbSo if you want it as a games console, go right ahead but if you want it as a home entertainment system, forget it

Be aware that you are purchasing it online that you'll most likely have to pay Customs Tax on import which will add a good bit more to the price.

i was going to do this when i bought my PS3, it was when the 60GB was €600 could have got it in the states for less then €400, you'll need to get a power converter and something else to get it to work, but the main problem is you lose your warranty when it leaves the states, thats why i went against it in the end, wasnt worth the risk. sure there only €400 here now, better then the €490 i paid for a 2nd hand one with nothing in GAME(a week later it went down in price:mad:)

I think im going to go with the irish version.safer in long run might sve 150 euro buying it in america but if any thing goes wrong plus the power converting problem

I bought mine in the us. Its only worth your while if you are in america, importing is just not worth it.

You don't need a power converter. Just need a pc cable.
Games are region free so far so thats grand
about half of blurays are region free.
    Irish DVDs wont work
    Ps2 games wont work
He' right you have no warranty outside of the US(Ps3 have an extremely low failure rate though)

It just depends if the cons out way the price in you opinion.

If you get a Japanese one, it'll work out even cheaper, and will also play Irish DVDs (but not bluray). You can change the language to English as well.

The new 40 GB ones do not have a multi-voltage power supply. I got an Irish one about 2 weeks ago (220v only) and am just about to buy a white one for someone in Japan (110v) only, so for 40 GB versions, whether they be Irish, Japanese, or American, you will need a power convertor (Power City have down convertors for about 20 euro).

Hi, I am regular visitor to the US and got my 360 here (no issues at mo), but did buy a 80Gb PS3 last friday evening, but by Sat morning I had changed my mind as I want it more for the blu ray, dvds etc and not really for gaming yet. So on that I sent it back (after unpacking it, updating it and playing it). They took it back with full refund.

Just back from Tokyo with my Japanese 40 GB - even with the power convertor it does NOT work. I'm thinking the convertor won't output enough wattage for it to work - so am wondering if indeed it is dual voltage, even though it says 110 in the manual? Anyone have any experience of just swapping the plugs and plugging straight into 220v?

Recently bought an 80gb PS3 in Singapore, but can't play DVD's on this machine. Is there anyway of modifying the machine so it is compatible with Irish DVD's/Blueray?

No, absolutely no way to mod PS3 at the moment.

I was unable to get a straight answer from Sony so I opened my Japanese 40GB PS3, and I can confirm that the power supply is indeed dual voltage. I've now got it plugged straight into an Irish socket.
