I use Soundforge and it's never failed me - in fact it's brilliant! :D

Audacity is free and will do you fine. The main thing is to get a half-decent recording interface for the laptop - plugging a line out into your mic jack just won't do!

Well whats your budget? Do you have firewire? Would you like any additional features?

In essence, all you really need is something with stereo RCA in's (the red and white jacks on the back of your mixer)

i have a firewire port on the back of my laptop and cdjs and mixer

is what your saying that i could simply get a lead that has a firewire end on one side and phono on the other??

If such a thing existed, yep :D (Well there I have seen some cable thats 1/4" to USB but I'd say it sounds like **** (and how would it differentiate for high-z?)

This would it do it nicely and cheaply (69 euro + 15 shipping)

or if you wanted something portable that would record to a USB key without a laptop

and before you ask, thomann.de is a reputable site - its damn cheap and the majority of boards musicians have used it countless times (including myself).

This, along with Audacity, should do the job very nicely.
