The gf is having a bit of problem with her computer. There is no sound on it and it is urgently needed as shes is a composer and the program for writing music is used on the computer and need playback.

I am heading over later to see if i can sort it. It seems to me that there is a cable missing. The stupid question has been asked if the volume is turned up (gf didnt like that :D)

The sound is from the monitor. There are two cables coming from the monitor, the power cable and a blue one that screws in (RS232 i think). Should there be another cable between the computer and monitor other than the RS232?

I can pick up any cable necessary on my way over if needed. Moved recently so a cable may have got lost during moving.

The monitor is a prestigio 17 inch monitor, not sure the model number.

Make sure she has sound card drivers installed, first find out what sound card or chipset she has, and download a driver, some common ones are Creative, Realtek etc...

If the speakers are on the monitor there should be another cable to go from the audio out on the sound card(green jack socket) to the audio in on the monitor also green. Sometimes they are built into the video cable check that before purchasing anything.

You need a cable with a 3.5 mm stereo jack plug on each end .

I think the drivers are ok bacause she has this computer for a while and it is in pretty good shape performance wise. The computer has not been put together until last night and the sound was gone.

Sound has always been there before so makes me think there is cable missing. Can them RS232 cables carry audio? If not what cable is needed?

Nice one @the muppet. forgot to mention that got her to put headphones into the line out on the CPU and only static was coming through. I have a feeling she may have put the headphones in the line in by mistake.

If she put the headphones in the correct connection on the sound card and got no sound that would indicate another problem. It could be as simple as having the mute on or volume turned down or wrong device selected in the sound settings or there could be a driver problem.

Made sure to see if she had mute on or sound down. Mite pick up a cable on the way and just try it out.

I'm having a similar problem with a new laptop. In Control Panel, Sound and Audio devices it says there there is no device present. How do I fix this, please? How do I tell it that it does have a soundcard?!

Thanks for the reply but still no sound, i put in the CD to run a repair, it wants the last good config, however this computer never had one. The sound has never worked. I also ran windows update to see if there were any updated hardware drivers for the sound card, but nothing. Any other ideas?
