Nice site there, been browsing through the pics, and while i knew that we get decent surf here in the west coast of Ireland, i didn't realise that we got monsters like this 10334.jpg20569.jpg
Some nice pics on that site, if i had a car, i'd be heading to Inch strand this weekend

I'll be heading down to Garrettstown on saturday morning. With a probable drive by the old head for some cliff action

[I gotta go up to Wicklow for a party in the evening so can't make sunday morning - but the weather looks drier and windier on Saturday which should make for less hassle and better pictures anyway!]

Looking at the swell direction Castlefreke looks a good bet for big surf -

outstanding. Cheers! I'll get myself down there this sunday so.

Guys. I've been thinking of having a look myself. Looks like it's gonna peak on Saturday late afternoon. Long drive from Dublin though. If I do go, what lenses? Or will it make no difference?

Sligo is probably nearer to Dublin if you're looking for big waves this weekend. I haven't looked at the forecast for Strandhill but if the coast from Bundoran down to Garretstown is getting it...might be worth considering.

Bring all the lenses. Otherwise you'll probably still regret not bringing one.

Black sack full of lenses :)

I'll be going from Maynooth. So I guess Bundoran is probably my best bet.

With swells like that, I'd nearly be tempted to go back down to Kerry this weekend. Shame I've stuff on this Saturday.

Can't wait to see some picts posted.

Check the rte website for a news report. They are predicting 45ft waves all along the wast coast. It's in video report on the bottom right of the main page.
If that dosn't 'Wet your appitite' :) for a trip to the west then nothing will.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭nilhg

Looks like all the ingredients are there for some dramatic action shots, I'd love to go but can't:(.

Any of you guys that do go, please be careful, there won't be much margin for any error or slips.

Can't make West Cork this weekend but would love to get a few snaps.
Can travel anywhere between Youghal/Ardmore and say Cobh. Would it be worthwhile going for a spin around? - maybe Ballycotton? any advice.........

achill island is where ill be but i dont i will have the kit you guys will have. just my ordinary digital camera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭sheesh

High tide in kerry is at 830 inthe morning and around the same in evening. I'm assuming that the waves will be higher on the rising tide.

If any of you are going to Brandon bay for a look, Stradbally will be rougher that Fermoyle as the waves get smaller as you go west there.

What about Banna or Ballyheigue Beach you could shoot from the car!

Sorry for being busy yesterday. I am going to the Clonakilky and Skibereen area now. If you meet to stupid guys trying to protect their cameras in wind and rain by their jackets, please, come and have a chat ;)

Folks, none of the beaches will have anything worth taking pics of.
The waves will be breaking too far out, and wont be clean. All you will see is mushy white.
If you went to bundoran and looked at the waves out in front of you in the town, there are several reefs that will make for excellent shots. Likewise for easky or other big wave reefs. Maybe mullaghmore head (the first pic of richie fitz on this thread is mullaghmore head).
Likewise, the cliffs of moher has at least one jet ski tow in team out today on Aileens(google it)

braved the cold and wind and took a few shots down at garrettstown, co. cork. Glad there was a few kite, wind and regular surfers there as the waves were not that huge imo.

Looks a lot calmer than it was!

yeesh.. garretstown looks very tame. Kinda rethinking on the trip to red strand tomorrow now...

Took a trip to Bundoran, then round by Mullaghmore and Strandhill as the light faded.. Very underwhelmed by the results :( On the plus side, I did get my legs and all up my back soaked by a freak wave while on the pier in Fundoran.. There's nothing quite like sitting in wet jeans and shoes for a couple of hours :D

Here are a few taken along the Clare coast yesterday. I started off in Lahinch which didn't have much other than the frothy foam FuzzLogic mentioned.

    lahinch_small.jpg

Further north at the Cliffs of Moher, the wind was so strong that it was picking up a stream which usually drops over the edge of the cliff and blowing it back where it came from...

    cause_and_effect_small.jpg

I finished up in Doolin. In the background you can see two more streams/waterfalls being blown back onto the land..

I agree that it was hard to capture the wildness of the day. I had trouble just holding the camera still to take some shots the wind was so strong, but the shots themselves almost look calm! It was still good to get out and experience it first hand though.

This is where IS came into its own.

This is my best shot from the weekends waves.

what a balls... went to garrettstown to get a taster of what the weather would produce. There was one person in the water that seemed afraid to get up on the board. The waves weren't anything special. Decided against going further on to red strand. Ah well, maybe it'll be better in 15 years time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭kenwood

One poor soul at Ballinwilling Strand in East Cork braving the elements.
And one one with some white surf with Ballycotton Island in backround.

    jesus, bet he's cold :)

Although maybe not with the wetsuit...

I got wet, haven't seen big waves and got sand-bruised.
No good pictures, I think. We'll see in few weeks. But disappointment from my performance with my camera :(

Had the same underwhelming experience in garrettstown on saturday morning. Even the waves at the old head felt small (and the with the wind, it didn't seem the best place to hang around!).
The waves at the back seemed to be picking up as I was leaving but the one surfer in didn't seem to be riding any and I had to go...
glad some people - latchiko and oshead - seemed to get some good shots.
It's forecast to windy again this weekend but I might treat that with a bit of salt in the Cork area...
