Pink Floyd Tattoo, and some questions :)

Hello there! Long time lingerer first time poster, in this section anyways :D

Have been planning this tattoo for quite some time now, but as it is my first ( yeah I'm one of those sorry! :)) I have quite a few questions :o

    Firstly, The Design

I'm thinking of getting the Dark Side of the Moon prism on my wrist, so pretty small I guess. I really want it to be very true to the original artwork, so sharp lines, sharply defined Rainbow (see pic) http://www.seedfloyd.fr/wiki/_media/actualites:decembre-2006:pink-floyd-dark-side-of-the-moon.jpg

Will this be too small an area to get this done well? Also I have been thinking/planning on getting none of the black background done on this, thoughts? Heres some from Deviantart with the background in various ways:

    1. http://vagerger.deviantart.com/art/Pink-Floyd-tattoo-7036844
    2. http://passionprincess.deviantart.com/art/Floyd-Tattoo-13659823

The design as I've drawn it up would have the prism at about 2.3cm in Width and the ray and rainbow being about the same in length, perhaps a little less depending on the wrap-around on the wrist. Would this be too small? (note the top of the prism facing towards the palm)

    The Ink

So as far as the inks go, I want to be pretty much as exact as possible to the rainbow on (in?) the artwork. That should be no problem I guess for any experienced artist. I have been thinking about UV ink however, as a highlight on the tattoo. So the incoming ray (incident ray if we get technical) will be standard UV (whitey purpley) glowing, and the prism also. Next I want the spectrum that comes out of the prism to be highlighted in the corresponding colours. I was wondering if there are places in Ireland that do coloured UV too? I think I read somewhere on the forums that you can basically bring in your own ink and they'll use that on you if you want. Would I need to do this?

Is it even possible to get UV ink highlighted over another ink? Do the inks have to be pre-mixed? Would this have to be done in two or more sessions? Enlighten me please :)

Also (sorry this is really long), I'd like to get some lyrics below the prism itself, in UV if possible. This raises the question, what does UV lettering look like in regular light? Due to the size the lettering would have to be, is it even feasible?

    The Lyrics:

Long you Live and High you Fly
Smiles You'll give and Tears you'll Cry
All you Touch and All you See
Is all your Life will ever be

Pretty deep eh? Don't really think I could cut those down either, so its pretty much those or none, unless any other Floyd fans have a better DSOTM quote?

    EEP its permanent

Yeah, I'm a chicken and have no long-term self-trust as such. What are my options for temporary placement of this design? I think I read that you can get your custom design done with airbrushing, anybody actually do this in Dublin?

Also, I have this weird vision of this either fading and looking really poor, or aging and wrinkling to look really really cool, like nostalgic or something like my battered LP cover. What kind of smudging/ loss of definition would I expect for something so small and intricate?

    Finally, the Studio

Well, I went into Celestial Ring (Stephens Green Place) and told the guy at the desk my idea ( Wasn't Jani, was a Japanese guy if I remember correctly). He sounded completely uninterested and gave me no confidence in him nor my design, made me really doubt my idea as such. Who would you recommend for intricate Colour/UV design as I have described? Looking on the internet there looks to be a very cool place on Dorset Street with the guy actually having done a Pink Floyd tattoo before. (link: http://www.tattoodublin.com/gallery8i.htm p.s thats currently down, doont know if its coming back. its that second one here http://images.google.ie/images?q=wish%20you%20were%20here%20tattoo&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi )

Thanks so much for your time guys, hope to hear some feedback from you :)

Oh, Im in Dublin if that affects who I should go to at all, I'm really willing to go anywhere in Ireland (maybe even UK) to get this done right. :D

eep, that's a lot to take in... ill reread again when im by myself and can concentrate, but one thing i will say is that you wont be able to get that much of the lyrics on your wrist unless it's quite big, or the words will all smudge into each other after a few years.

Right, thought that would be the case, thanks for the quick reply man :) Im thinking of doing the lyrics somewhere else actually, but haven't really figured where or when for that matter! :) I look forward to the full read :) woo

Well as for the UV ink, it's really about buying them, going around stores and asking nicely and hopeing that they are willing to work with it*, but that would be a later concern for this tattoo as you can get it re-inked with the UV ink at a later time, there's no need to premix them or anything like that.
For something like this I'd suggest you buy the full set rather than trying to pick out the colours that best suit via the web images (the hard part will be figuring out how much you need, but I don't think you'll need much for this), then when you get them you can try make a decision taking into account both how closely the normal colour matches the colour already there (since otherwise it will change the colour shade a bit) and how happy you are with the colour under UV.

As for UV ink lettering it all depends on skin tone as to if the white UV ink will show up easily, but even on pale skin it doesn't tend to be too bad in honesty as long as the scarring (from the tattooing process) is mild. You will also find that it's visibility can vary a bit depending on what you're up to, e.g. after a shower/swim it becomes more visible for me for a brief while, in the summer with a little tannage it becomes less visible, depending on how I stretch the skin it can become more visible or less visible, etc...
Narco is right on the size of the lettering though, either you're a lot bigger around the wrist than I am or you'd need the lettering to be so small that they would perhaps blur into each other over time and become a bit illegible.

If you do decide to get the UV ink added make sure to bring a blacklight so that you can see how well the UV ink has been done since it will be difficult to see any gaps due to the normal ink already there.

*you won't get a discount or anything because it's your own ink before you ask, most of the money you pay for tattoos is for the real estate (taking up studio space for X amount of time) and the artists time.

Right, think I'll look at getting some UV inks online then, I'll go check out zulu and some other dublin studios to see what the story is.

Will the colour work on such a small area be defined as i want it to be?

There's no reason that it shouldn't be as defined as anywhere else on your body! Just don't get it too near the wrist, as there is an area around your wrist where the skin moves a lot, and it could lead to the tattoo deteriorating quicker. A few cm from the wrist should be fine!

So the lyrics would definately be a big no-no?

Im considering getting them horizontally along my other arm, may work better. God I'm such a tatoo noob.

I think the lyrics are just too much for the arm... horizontally and definately vertically...
I think that would make a great chest piece though... the prism with the lyrics under...

I just can't give that much of my body to this really, its my first so I'm still a bit iffy about it all. Maybe one day I'll get something more intense :)
