    Hi there,

It all depends what you are into. I would recommend flying into a small airport like Durham Tees Valley (ryanair fly there very cheaply- used to be called Teesside). You have the great North Yorkshire/Durham countryside right there. North Yorkshire is esp great - it's a big place with great villages like Hutton Le Hole and towns like Richmond. Teesside which is Middlesbrough, plus Stockton and Redcar has an undeserved bad rep but is a good place to shop. On the edge of Middlesbrough are some great villages like Yarm, Stokesley and Great Ayton. If you want a great city, Newcastle is fantastic. Make sure you walk along the Quayside and up Grey Street into its city centre. And try to get out on to the coast to places like Tynemouth - it's on the Metro. Further north is the Tyne Valley which has very classy places like Corbridge and Hexham. Great place for Roman ruins and of course Hadrian's Wall. Remember the North East was recently voted by Lonely Planet as one of the top 30 undiscovered destinations in the world!

The Sail and Rail deal can be a good deal if you have the time, better as a summer cruise rather than in this current climate though.

It's about two hours on the fast sailing to holyhead and then the a train to Chester, Liverpool or one of those towns. Pretty cheap and a bit different. You get to see a bit more on the Journey too.

Strangely enough, it makes Ryanair seem a bit crap. Can't think why...

As well as the above, I'd definitely recommend Northumberland.

Farne islands, bamburgh castle, alnwick(castle), Seahouses - lovely scenery around there - right up to Scottish border.

We took the car over for a week in September, did the whole Yorkshire Dales & Lake District round trip. Fantastic scenery, highly recommended and great to be able to sit into the car and go whenever, where ever. Beats airport queuing by a looooong way!
