so i rang all the insurance companys and aperintly you have to be 25 to get classic insurace thats madness iam 21.
i rang nealy 10 companys and got the same answer
is there any other alternatives out there i could use
i plan to have it as a second car just for a bit of weekend driving
a friend of mine said i could try to insure it under my fathers name and put myself down as a named driver would that work.
thing is i have the car and i dont want to sell it or wait till iam 25 lol it will be a rust buckit by then.

    any help much appreciated

Try the Irish vintage Society, not sure of an age limit, but they might be able to help.

Just insure it under a regular policy, AXA or Hibernian would cover it.

First Ireland also insure classics as regular cars.
Don't know about their age limits though.

i had a 72 merc as a regular car with First Ireland. They will require an engineers report on the car.

engineers report what does that involve would nct do

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 723 ✭✭✭3ps

    yes NCT would do.

I was given a checklist and needed an SIMI garage to inspect the car. It was quite comprehensive and your car would need to be in good nick.

My UK MOT done just before export was good enough for AXA.

    its a cutlass supreme
i have a uk mot its been out since september 06
i went into the nct office today to book nct but they said i need the original car regresitration date how do i get this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 723 ✭✭✭3ps

are you sure you want it put through the NCT???

a friendly local garage might just inspect it for roadworthiness without revving the bejaykers out if it etc.......

If you can get a quote they will tell you who they'll accept a report from, road worthiness cert is probably a little more forgiving than an NCT.

Good choice of car, 5.0L V8? I always liked Oldsmobile's, especially the Delta 88.

What year is the car? Looks to be an 1980's car, which wouldn't be 30 years old. To be honest, there is absolutely no chance of getting insurance on a car like that, especially with a V8 motor under the bonnet. You'd also have to consider tax & petrol costs, which would be rather unforgiving as well.

Best thing to do would be to leave it in a garage (provided you have one) for 4 years and then get insured by then. Good things come to does who wait.

heres one I always wondered would work....

insure your road car in your fathers name with you as anther driver and then get him to transfer the insurance for the weekend on to the luxo-barge.....i wonder if there is anything in the small print then to prevent you driving it as a named driver in your oul fellaz policy?

btw do you realise you have to have an ordinary policy on an everyday car before you can get classic insurance anyway?.....these rules are there to stop people finding a cheap route to getting insurance on a higher risk car....

i do have a ordinary policy on an everyday car.
its clearly an age discrimination thing all thies classic car companys have set up. can they get away with this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,568 ✭✭✭Blue850

Does your everyday policy give you third party cover to drive other cars? If so would it work to put the yank in your Dad's name and him insure it on a classic policy?
