Whats the story with the TCD general engineering degree. Does all four years count towards your final degree or is it just the last two where you specialise

Last year counts as 100% if you do E&E, Mech, Comp etc. Civil, Structural & Env is 20% of third year and 80% of fourth year.

May have changed, of course... Have a look at your handbook.

Where did you find this out and when did this ''rule'' apply

All the final year handbooks can be read and downloaded at

    http://www.tcd.ie/Engineering/undergraduate/baiyear4/

the 0708 handbooks include the following statement:
For students in the Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering and the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering streams, honors are awarded based on the combined annual Junior Sophister examinations (20% towards overall B.A.I. grade) and the annual Senior Sophister examinations (80% towards overall B.A.I. grade).

Honors are awarded based on the results of the annual Senior Sophister examinations only for students in Electronic Engineering; Electronic/Computer Engineering; and Computer Engineering, where there is no contribution from the Junior Sophister annual examinations towards the overall B.A.I. grade.

The same thing is explained (using slightly different language) in the current edition of the College Calendar (see page M12 here: http://www.tcd.ie/info/calendar/pdf/faculty_engineering_systemssciences.pdf)

The Engineering office (8961746) will be able to give a precise answer on the position in past years if that's specifically what you're after.

    From doing engineering!

Rule has been there for years. What part do you dislike?

As said here for mech, the 3rd year counts also.

You don't have to worry about c++ electronics etc. if you go on to do civil or mech but the electronics helps with mechatronics, the c++ with matlab etc. so there's always knowledge to be gained which will halp you in future from these courses.

what do you want to specialise in anyway?

Also anyone know when its turning into a 5 year degree+masters?

you know, I've just finished Computer and Electrical engineering and I've never touched magnetism or electricity and as for C++ I'd give my right arm to have done some over the last two years.
