When you say it won't open what do you mean? Does anything happen at all? Any error messages?

Google for the Vista codecs pack and install that. If that doesn't solve the problem then it is possible that the file is just a dud. Was it downloaded from somewhere less than reputable?

no it is a work based movie, i have been looking around and it could be to do with Samsung phone software

Sorry, but is it just this file that won't open or have you tried other files?

You could also try copying the file and renaming it to a .avi

VLC Player plays almost any file and will repair damaged or corrupt files, so this is unusual.

Have you checked the processes after trying to open the file? Just to see if it's trying to do something or if there's anything else running that might be stopping it?

Download and install GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and use it to find out what codec is being used and also if the rendering is failing it will give you the error codes
