Sky+ questions

    Hi

I am existing Sky subscriber and want to go down to Sky+ route as one of my HDD Recorders has just broken and Sky+ seems affordable as a replacement.

Have checked Sky website but doesn't answer all my questions so need some advice from you nice people.

Firstly, is it true that there is no longer a subscription? I pay for the box and installation and that's it?

If I bought one from a shop/online how easy is it to install?

I have two sky boxes at the moment - when they install the Sky+ is it a replacement for one box or is it an extra unit.

    Thanks for your help

If it's a replacement can I then keep my extra Sky box and install it in another room?

Does the fact that I have two sky boxes but just want one Sky+ box cause a problem?

As long as you subscribe to sky, the Sky+ recording features are free.
You can keep your old sky boxes and install them in other rooms.
If you have 2 boxes installed you more then likely already have a quad lnb installed on your dish. To install sky + you need two cables running from dish to your sky+ box.
Your cheapest option at the moment is the Sky introduce a friend offer, if you refer a friend to sky before 30th Nov you and your friend get a free sky+ box, just pay €45 installation.
The fact you have 2 boxes already is no problem. You can connect 1 sky+ box and two sky boxes to one dish.

    Cheers

Guess I just need to rope someone in as a new subscriber.

Wondering would the Sky technician hook the extra box up for me - although I want it upstairs so it could be a big job with the whole phone line connection thing.

The sky technician will install the second box. If its multiroom you will need a phoneline.
If the second box is only for freesat, then no phoneline required. Offer technican a few bob for installing second box.(If non multiroom)

I had two boxes installed to begin with so i assume I have multiroom but I don't want a phoneline running upstiars to a sky box.

If i just have the box left over do can I connec that to the dish myself without hooking up to a phoneline?

If both boxes are subscribed to services, Sky will try and insist on a phoneline being hooked up to them.

The two boxes are already hooked up - i want to know what will happen if i replace one with a sky+ box and don't want the third box to be hooked up to the phoneline - is it possible i could hook it up to the dish myself - would this mean a hazardous trip to my roof?

Starting from the beginning and answering each of your questions in turn:

1 - I believe you are correct about there no longer being a need for a subscription for the recording facility. I got a letter in the post about rewarding me for my long-term custom and did not realise that they were doing away with the charge for everyone. You still must pay for the channels themselves, just to be clear.

2 - Not sure. You'll need two cables running from the dish to your box (so you can watch one channel while recording another). It depends on how handy you are.

3 - You decide whether you want it as a replacement unit, and keep your two positions OR you can take a third subscription out and have a third position wired up. Tell Sky in advance when you book the engineer callout.

    4 - Yes, see answer 3.

5 - None whatsoever, apart from the two cables going to the Sky+ box. That can hardly be seen as a problem.

Thanks very much - very informative.

I think I woill probably go with it as a replacement unit for one of my boxes - I have a HDD recorder anyway that I can use on the other - sky+ seems quite handy to use.

Yes, it's a breeze and I tend to record everything and watch it later so that I can skip all the feckin' ads.

Are you buying the 20Gb or the 160Gb model? I'd go for the 160Gb (I own a 20Gb and can fill it up fairly quickly if I am away for a few days) if you can stretch that far.

What sort of price difference are we talking - 20 GB seems a bit small

    Hi Folks,

Im thinking of getting Sky+ into my new place and want to run the cabling for two bedrooms and two points in the living area (so potentially 4 boxes hooked up). I wont be getting a phoneline in at all as I dont need it so Do I need two cables to each of those points if I wish to have a Sky+ box?

You'll need two cables where ever you plan putting a Sky+ box.

If you're thinking of getting Sky Multiroom, then a phoneline is obligitory.

Cheers Byte, so because I dont have a phoneline then I cant get multiroom - thats beyond homo. I thought Sky had some sense, surely they are aware that people are using just their mobiles now adays.

Indeed, it's to make sure both boxes are in the same residence, otherwise there'd be nothign to stop people getting Multiroom, and having the boxes in other houses for cheaper subscription.

LOL the crafty buggers they are on to us :-P This is one of the main reasons Ive never gotten Sky before, they are just a lil bit too tight for my liking. I would much prefer to get cable TV and not have to deal with the crap of boxes and cards but unforutnately the availability of cable in my new place is tied to single cowboy operation. Bring on IPTV :-)

IPTV would require a very good broadband connection with good bandwidth, something that's rare enough in these parts too.

Hi byte, i have a sky+ rec. question.

I was recording the final part on The Boss on the Last Broadcast - Net2 tonight as it was at the end of the prog & when i played it back it showed Part Rec 34m , Cancelled??

I've recorded other shows & cut out the ads as well by pausing/stopping it.

But this has happened before on the 1st part & only realised the 5th part was on & forgot about that it does that  Is it just this prog or does that happen as its not much help havin 30m of an unwanted program!

I hope you dont mind me posting here, as i dont want to add another thread & this one seems pretty generalised & maybe could be made a sticky? :)

    Thanks.
