Xmas Camera shopping - Canon 40D

I was always planning on buying myself my first reflex this Xmas to replace my trusted bridge and had almost decided on the model when I got to work to learn of a bonus we were all getting !

So now that my budget has risen, I'm looking at :

    CANON-EOS 40D
    Sigma 18-200mm F3,5-6,3 DC OS

    = €1660

I'll be looking to invest in other lenses in the future but for now would like an "all-rounder"

So is there anything I'm missing here? Better to get a Nikon D80 and a better quality lens with the difference in price? (D80 = €774 / 40D = €1140) so Nikon is €400 cheaper.

The Canon 40D is a brilliant camera. I would certainly recommend it.

No idea about that lens though.

It seems like you have already thought through what you want. Best of luck with your choice.

Nice body but how about throwing in the 50mm f1.4.

    It's €380

If I was going down then route then I'd probably go for 2 lenses but leaving me only €200 for the second which would have to be a zoom so a little tight there.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I'm pretty sure about the body it's just the lens bit I need to get down.

Maybe just get a 50mm today and look out for a telezoom in the sales after Xmas...

I got the 50mm 1.4 for 280 (incl postage) last week from Kerso on ebay. He's based in Scotland, so there are no import tax issues to deal with. Might be worth having a look there for the 40D.

Cambo, would you post a link to Kerso's site.. can't find it in the sticky..
    Cheers.

I'll third the not sure on the big lens. You might get this instead. By all accounts it's a cracking piece of glass.

Thanks Bedlam, I just wanted to nosey on the Kerso site. I am looking to upgrade my Sigma 70-300. Kea would be the first I'd check. Hoping to find this one even cheaper!!

For 1660 (if you shop around) you could get the brilliant D80 with the equally brilliant Nikon 18-200VR and you will most definitely not regret it.

The Nikon D80 will set me back €774 as opposed to €1140 for the Canon. I don't think they're in the same range, the D80 being last years model though of course not taking anything from it's quality.

If I was going down the Nikon path I'll probably go with the D200 for €1200

Bodies come and go, the d200 is already superceded for example. Better to spend more on the glass imo, you can take it with you when you upgrade.

well they guarantee no VAT or Duty to a UK shipping address so I figured it must be an old colonial throwback thing with UK/HK so if you got it delivered to a friends address in the UK then you are entitled to move within the EU and "bring it home"

Not too bad if that excess baggage was packed full of L lenses :)

Mate I have that lens for my 400d, got it in HK when I was there about a year ago.

All in all it was a good starter zoom lens, but I've since replaced it with a canon 24-105 L f/4. Apart from the fact that the canon lens has IS, I've come to realise I don't really need to zoom all that close and with the 200mm (and the 1.6 crop of course) being equivalent to 320mm on this camera I could never really get a fast enough frame rate/big aperture and still have a nice contrasty, colourful image without distortion.

If one lens is it, it's not too bad but having two to cover the same range would definitely be recommended.
