A work colleague approached me this morning as they always do when their home computers give trouble. Usually I can help them but this time I need your help. He tells me that his son was messing around with DPI settings and somehow changed them to a setting that means they can no longer see anything on the screen

My details are very sketchy as thats all I was told!

I for one have no idea what he was trying to achieve but I would like to help the work mate out as he a sound skin

    Thanks

DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. Are you using Vista or XP? I know on Vista it's pretty easy to change the DPI although I can't see how any change could make anything disappear. Regardless, to change the DPI in Vista right-click on the desktop and go to Personalise. A window will pop up with an option on the left "Adjust Font Size (DPI)". Click this and you can set your DPI to default or large scale. There's also a custom box - try fiddling around with the slider bar there to see if you can fix the problem.

For XP I think it's a bit more complicated. Right click on the desktop and click Display. A bit of a browse around there should find it. I'm sure one of the XP lads will give you clearer instructions.

Let us know how you get on.

Ah here we go. I found this little guide to change DPI on XP:
    http://www.lawfirmsoftware.com/support/change_dpi_settings_xp.htm

You could try printing it out and letting him have a go at it. It's a fairly straightforward process.

Still raining we have our wires crossed! He cant even see the desktop. whatever his son did he has reduced the DPI so such a small size that they cant get at it to change it!

You've got me stumped there! All I can think of is booting into safe mode and trying to change it there. Hopefully he'll be able to see something in safe mode!

Boot into safe mode (hold down f8 key when booting). It will display in the default settings and will alow you to change the resolution back to one which the monitor supports. 800 x 600 or 1024X768
