What Do I Do Now

Right, I've been a silly bugger, and Im gonna need some advice
Yesterday I was driving thru Glasnevin bout half six last night. When I spotted some guy, out for the count, lying on the footpath next to the road. So obiously I pull my car over straight a way to see if he's alright. As I said he's out for the count and his face is cut up very badly. He comes around, So I help him up of the ground and since were in only in Glasnevin I offer to drive him to casualty. So I drop him off in the matter. Make sure he's being looked after and go on my merry way.

So I'm back in my car and driving back up to my great aunts when I look at my hands and realsie there covered in blood. HIS BLOOD.

Before anyone asks the guy was Irish and in his 40's to 50's

Being a silly bugger I think nothing of it drive to my aunts house and wash the blood off.

It only when I say it to tell her about it, and she starts to hurl abuse at me that I realise hit me I dont know who this guy was, I dont know why he was passed out, and that I got my hands covered in his blood. I realsise in all likly hood I hav nothing to worry about. But the more I tell people the story the more horror dtories I hear and the more strung out I get.

I assume Im going to have to get some sort of blood test, for Hepatitis, etc, etc. I havent a clue where to get this done or if I even need it. I'm assuming I'll need a more thourough blood test then for a STI clinic. So what do I do. Do I go to my GP, the Hospital, where ?, Or is it just me and everyone else over reacting.

Unless you had an open wound on your hand you shouldn't have much to worry about but just to alay your own fears and those of the others you told probably best just to get the tests so you can say 100% that you didn't catch anything.
Might be worth giving the car a scrub too or you'll have people afraid to get in that too for the same reason.

    Hey there OP,

What a kind act by the way, fair play, plenty of people would have driven on.

Tbh you run a low risk of contracting anything, to put your mind at ease though you could go for tests, I'd say the risks are minimal.

Have a look at the STI sticky at the top of this forum for information on clinics etc. The chances of contracting something are probably minimal, but it's always better to be safe rather than sorry

It will be a worry for you. if you are still worried go to your GP and explain the situation.

For your own piece of mind he may tell you to wait for 12 weeks or so then book you into have a test done.

or at least explain the risks and how slight they are

I'd just like to reiterate what Miss Fluff said. Fair play to you for stopping and helping the guy. It's good to know there are still some decent people out there!

good on you for helping. I would advise everyone to keep a small first aid kit in the car boot for this type of reason. Many people obviously passed him by without even knowing if he was alive. At least there are some good people left.

Why would I have to wait 12 weeks,

You've very little to worry about. I got bitten a few years back by a junkie, broke the skin and I was bleeding. Went to Mater, doctor told me I had a very remote chance of catching anything. Put me on Augmentin just in case and had follow up tests. All clear. The probabilities are very low, there are so many factors that are necessary, open wound, etc. Unless you had a big cut on your own hand or licked his blood of your hands you have very little to worry about.

You certainly dont have an STI. Go to your GP, he might just put you on a course of anti-biotics to be sure. You'll feel better if you go anyway. Peace of mind and all that.

I believe it can take 12 weeks or more for some diseases/infections to be tested for. However I am not 100% on this and I advise you go to your GP or nearest STI clinic ASAP to

    A) Talk about what happened
    B) Have the risks (if any) explained to you by a professional
    C) Talk about the best course of action (tests) to proceed with.

yes it can take up to 3 months to get results back, for hepatitis/hiv. fair play for stopping for the guy. as said unless you had open wounds on your hands, your more than likely fine.

    +1
Risks are very small. The skin is an excellent barrier but go for the tests to put your mind at ease.
    Well done again for stopping!

you did well stopping. Blood on your hands shouldnt be anything to worry about.

Fair play for stopping, I know if I'd seen him, I'd have wanted to stop but probably wouldn't have stopped out of worry that I'd end up getting attacked or something... :o

You're probably fine as pretty much everyone has said, but unless you get checked you'll just worry yourself silly at every little cough you get...

Here here, the majority of people would have driven on done nothing and thought nothing more about it.

I seriously doubt you picked up anything but for peace of mind I'd go to your GP

Applause for the OP! You could have saved that man's life!

Personally I'd think nothing of it - call it ignorance, but then Im a yankee-doo: we hear about the next way to contract cancer and aids every tuesday :D Honestly though I have never heard of a case where blood on your hands would get you to contract aids/hiv. Ask a nurse or a casualty worker: they get covered in blood every once in a blue stab-victim. (poor souls)

Im sure you'll be fine but you seem concerned - so go get checked :) You should be quite proud of yourself however.

Ok so I've been toGP, He contacted the matter, The guy has Hep B, Even though its a remote chance I've been So given a standard Jab for people who have come into contact with it. I have to get the Hep B vaccine {e110}, I get my second shot next week, and have to get a HIV test in 3 months. Preety P1ssed off about this. Let this be a lesson to everyone dont bother your hole helping anyone cause it'll just end up bitting you in the arse

Rubbish. You did a brilliant deed.

I highly doubt you have Hb. All the same do check back with us - I for one would like to know how that goes.

Have you gone to visit the man yet?

;) and if the worst should happen at least you'll have a better Hb story than "I had sex with a ten euro Dutch prostitute" or something else completely stupid. You can tell people you helped somebody.

Actually it would make quite a good read. Had you thought about selling the story to the Times :)

Starn, fair dues for stopping, too many people would have turned the other way! But there is a lesson to be learned here. Blood borne pathogens are a very real risk in our modern world so you cant be too careful. Hind sight is 20:20 vision but the best thing to do is call an ambulance and if the victim is in no immediate danger then dont touch them. If there is visible blood or bodily fluid's and you absolutley must move them use anything available, plastic bags etc etc to protect yourself and wash your hands immediatley.
I think the likelyhood of you contracting Hep B from this person is extremely low so I doubt you have anything to worry about. Best of Luck and dont let it put you off doing such a valiant deed in the future, its always somebodies mother/brother/sister/daughter etc etc.
