I was thinking about getting my boyfriend a PS3 for xmas, just wanted to ask:

Do you need a HD Tv for the console?

Is there anyting else you need for it (for someone who doesnt hv a games console?)

You don't have to have HD tv, but it does look stunning on one. An extra controller maybe? There's only 1 with most packages being sold.

only 3 mobile BB so i dont think its good enough for gaming.

good idea with the extra controller!!

    anything else i would need??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,381 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I've the same set up, but apparently with a PS3 and 3DataModem compatable router it's possible for it to work.

Extra controller is all really! Oh, get him Guitar Hero 3 with the controller! You'll play it too!

Wow, what a lucky boyfriend..No you don't need a hdtv to play the games but the quality of the games is better on hdtv's but still i use a standard tv for my ps3 most times and between it and the hdtv i cant tell much of a difference but thats probably because i dont know much about them sorta things.

Well of course you would need a game or 2 for it :p hes hardly gonna sit there with a ps3 waiting to be played and then find out he has no games lol. I would recommend getting him Assassins Creed or something even though I dont really like Assassins Creed at the minute, but most people i know are loving it.

It's a game where you play a plastic guitar to some well known songs, brilliant! Look here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭dlambirl

WarZoneBrother - Yeah a few games would come in horrid handy!!! Whats Assassins Creed like? I was thinking of gettin him a racing game (someone said Colin Mc Rae DIRT) and something else...... dont know what though!??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭Qs

Assassins Creed looks great but recieved mixed reviews. What sort of games does he like?

If he likes shooting/war games Call of Duty 4 is your best option. If he likes football FIFA08 is this years best. DIRT is the best racer AFAIK. Other good games would be Ratchet and Clank, Oblivion, Skate, NHL08, Resistance.

Really depends what he is into.

He doesnt like soccer games so FIFA outta the question and he doesnt really like war games i dont think but i will have to get something other than racing games?!!

He said he seen one with Audi A4s and Twin Cams on the TV recently and I'd love to know what game that is??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭edmund_f

Think that would be need for speed pro street

my two cents would be to get it asap and give it to someone with a decent Internet connection, they could download various demos onto the PS3 - give you a taste for what is available for the PS3?..

Know next door neighbor is doing something similar so going to give her a hand and set up the PS3

Any game that you can constantly score from 35 yards easier then you can score when one on one isn't a proper soccer game

This debate is pointless in this context, as she has already stated he doesn't like football games! If you wanna continue it bring it here.

To get back on topic. Has your boyfriend a console at the moment? If so what games does he have for it?
Colin McCrae seems like a very good game cant see how you could go too far wrong with that.

Assassin's Creed is probably another game that would be good to get

Well some good news is that those old PS1 games will still play on a PS3 if he still has them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭Vorrtexx

If you've the 40GB version, then sorry you're out of luck. But the 60 or 80GB versions play the following:

Is it hard to set up the PS3 for the first time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 119 ✭✭firebug_guy

Can some please answer my question...

    Does the 40GB PS3 play normal run-of-the-mill DVD's?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭dlambirl

Yes it will play regular DVD movies as long as they are compatible with the same region as the PS3. So a PS3 from Ireland will only play Region 2 DVDs or any region free DVDs

    Thanks for ye're answer guys!
    Another quick question...

My bro works in a shop where he gets a 10% discount. Am I better off buying a PS3 for €360 or the offer in Game PS3 (40gb) with Assasins and some other game for €445? Its not for me, I'm buying for my boyf!

The Game Deal is good but as far as i know - they are changing their deals either today or tomorrow, it might not be the same one when you go to buy yours

very easy, theres only 3 cables and the controller.
    1. Plug in video cable. If you have a hdtv, you will need a hdmi cable, but if you are using a normal tv, the cable is supplied. It goes from playstation into scart socket with a little adapter (supplied).
    2. Plug in power lead.
    3. Plug in controller into usb lead (supplied) and plug this into usb port in front. This cable doesnt need to be plugged in all the time, it just charges the wireless controller.
    4. Flick on the on/off switch at the back, you will see little red light pop on front.
    5. tap the on button next to red light and your up!

Hey dlambirl reckon you should keep an eye out on adverts for a 60Gig one, can play all the old games has extra hard drive and will save ya a bit of money. Any of the systems on it aren't that old and people probably still have the packaging. When you're spending so much I think the boyf would appreciate the console just as much even if it is pre owned.

As for the games with the twin cam and all of that at a guess gran tuirismo hd? but others here can clear that up!
