Picture enhancement advice

Ok, I have many photos taken on various different cameras over the past while some nice some not so nice.

What I'd like to do is to enhance some of the nice ones by using something like Gimp. The problem is I have no idea where to start with it, i've trooled through tonnes of online guides but none seem to do what i want ( whic may be impossible lol).

To give you an idea of where im comming from, some of the pictures i want to touch up are night time shots in various lighting conditions and taken using various camera settings (i'm not at my own pc so i cant post an example at the moment) Sometimes the blacks appear a little blocky or have a purplish color to them. I know if the source is no good then there isn't much i can do, but some of them could be improved a little bit i think.

So if anyone can suggest things to try with gimp id appreciate the help.

You won't be able to do much with that.
Camera phones have tiny sensors and poor optics resulting in blurry noisy images.

Hopefully your other ones are better, you'd be surprised how much you can actually do!
