Hi Lex

Made my own out of a couple of bin liners (just in case one bursts) and some polystirene balls. Just stuff up the hole and fits nice.

regards

Would these not cause dampness to the wall if used for extended periods of time, as rain and hail, etc enter from chimney pot, and gathering where the balloon is?

Most likely evapourate before then build up. Very little water would actually make it to the balloon, most would hit the walls of the flue much further up

not a balloon, bit more pricy, maybe both at the same time would be the right job?

No. They are designed to be somewhat leaky and force the moisture back up.

Hi Lex,

You can get them from a company called Heat Savvy Homes. They are based near Drogheda.

Ordered a Chimney Balloon from these guys and I received it the next day delivered for free. (I don't know if that's standard, my house is on a popular run to the city center) I think they are based in Lucan.

http://www.dublinchimneysweep.com/ch...alloon_15.html

There is an 087 number there for the guy somewhere and I paid him COD.

BTW the balloons are a good idea, better than a home made one IMHO. We had a fire in our house in the 80's a spark from one chimney came down another chimney that had been stuffed with plastic and clothes to keep the draft out, they caught fire.

If you light a fire under a chimney balloon it will shrivel up and fall down and let smoke up the chimney, obviously the balloon is destroyed but it's a safer method.

I bought one from www.ChimneyBalloon.ie. Their website is http://www.ChimneyBalloon.ie

Very good price and delivered next day. Their website is also very good as I wasn't sure which size to select.

I also sell this product from my website. (Best not to name it but I assume its ok to PM me for details)
I only sell the product however as part of a pack which includes a 2 ft inflation tube. My experience is that it is virtually impossible to install the chimney balloon effectively in most flues without the aid of the inflation tube. When installing be prepared to get sutty hands but without the inflation tube you will also get a sutty face:eek:
I also recommend that you leave the inflation tube attached to the balloon and hanging down the fireplace after installing so as to prevent someone lighting the fire without first deflating the balloon.
As a retailer one of the made difficulties I initially had with the product was that the customer needed to measure their flue before knowing what size they required.
However the majority of homes built in Ireland in the last 40 years have a round shaped flue and the great news is that I now stock a version of the chimney balloon which is effective in all 7,8 or 9 inch round flues.
Another issue that I don't think has been mentioned is that the chimney balloon is a great way of stopping the whistling noise that often emanates from chimney flues when it is windy outside.
At present I also am offering free nationwide delivery when would buys 2 or more chimney balloon packs.

I bought one off this crowd www.chimneyballoons.ie. What a joke !!! After numberous phone calls and a steady stream of BS from the guy on the phone my chimney ballon finally arrived after a little over ONE MONTH. Stay clear.

Really is probably best to stick with the companies listed on David Woodman (the innovator and manufacturers website)
Listed here are the official suppliers.

I had nearly the same problem except I've never received the product but was charged anyway. I've tried numerous emails and phone calls later over a 4 week time frame with no response or just a "I'll have to look into that". I've had to accept these guys are a fraud and have contacted PayPal to see if I can get my money back.

My advice is to stay as far away as possible from www.chimneyballons.ie unless you want to get messed about.

Woodies selling them for €30,chimney sweep is the product name.Dont know if that makes any difference.

• Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,266 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

Yeah I dropped into Woodies today, they only seemed to have one size though.

I'm seriously considering the chimney draught stop device. 2 positions, open or closed. No chain hanging inside the fireplace to ruin the look of the cast iron. No maintenance also and no fear of a chain breaking.

250 supplied and fitted

Old pillow inside two heavy bin liners with a bit of red ribbon hanging off it. That's what I use, it's free, recycles old crap and stuffs the chimney tight. There's remarkably little dirt when removing it.

i have too agree with bk81 and catfromhue.bought aballoon of that crowd.was delivered but it was either just apile of crap or they sent the wrong sized one????would stay inflated alright but was whilsting air around it in places, and no that was,nt the breather gap,it was just not right for the job.took it out and made our own no comparison between the two.

When I first heard of these yokes I thought it was a joke. A neighbour of my swears by it though so I finally bit the bullet and ordered one online last Monday morning. It arrived with the post on Tuesday and in fairness it seems to make quite a difference alright.
I got the balloon and the inflation tube from www.purchase.ie for less than €24 delivered to the door. I rang them and they took the order over the phone. The chap on the phone said if you are doing it online to use a code cb15 to get that price.
Im glad I called them now cause I saw them in a Hardware Shop for €30 and they had no inflation tube. Without the tube there is no way I could have got it in the chimney flue.

My order finally arrived today. I placed it sevens week ago, spent about 4/5 trying to contact the company to no avail. Last week I contacted PayPal to see if they could get my money back as they processed the online payment. I've no doubt if I hadn't contacted PayPal
www.chimneyballoons.ie
would never have delivered my order.

I tried to ring them this afternoon but same old story, they don't answer the phone.

Stay far away from this "company"!!

Can I just repeat this warning re: chimneyballoon.ie

Ordered mine about two weeks ago - still hasn't been delivered and no answer to emails / calls...

Next stop PayPal....

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭tagoona

sorry to say that I'm about 2 weeks ahead of you. Got an email from paypal last week informing me that I'd be getting my money back.
None of the numbers available were contactable. Did get cut off while ringing the land line.
Is there any way we can stop paypal for taking payments from this company that's obviously gone bust?

I'd imagine if PayPal get enough compliants about the company they'll cancel their account.

I got my money back off PayPal in the end.

Got mine from www.ChimneyBalloon.ie - €23.70, cheapest I could find. Top class service, received next day.

I also ordered a balloon from http://www.chimneyballoons.ie/ one month ago, but haven't received the product and have had no response from their landline, mobile and two email addresses.

I'm in the process of getting a refund from Paypal.

There is another company with a similar name
http://chimneyballoon.ie/
and maybe the people who've had a good experience ordered from them!

Woodies stock three sizes now.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 PaulTheMajor

"chimneyballoon" and "chimneyballoons" seem to be two different companies. Like other contributors, "chimneyballoons" failed to deliver and PAYPAL returned my money. Then I bought the Woodies balloon.
Although it worked fine, it appears to have been sucked up into the chimney well beyond reach, so when I needed to light a fire I followed the instructions which say that lighting a fire will cause it to safely disintegrate. NOT TRUE!!!! Smoke poured into the room and has caused serious smoke damage. I almost called the fire brigade. I have no idea if the balloon is gone, however, we will have to get a chimney sweep to be certain, and then clean and redecorate the room.
BE WARNED!!!!

Does anyone know how to tell what size chimney/flue you have and if it's lined or not lined?

http://chimneyballoon.ie/content/picking-right-size-chimney-balloonsie

this page indicates how to measure. not sure about lined, ask the people in Woodies they should know. Best to buy from a shop like Woodies rather than online, there's some dodgy outfits out there....

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Thanks for that! Also came across these: http://www.chimneysheep.co.uk/

Anyone know where to buy these now? (Emails and phone calls to http://chimneyballoon.ie/ have gone unanswered so not sure if still in business).
