I seen this file there the other day. I was really disapointed..... I cant believe people are even speaking about this in the same sentence as the Godfather. The stort between Washington's character and Crowe's are stringed together so badly and left too late in the film.

I thought it was pretty good...except for russell crowe's hair! :p
Was the whole point not that the washington wasn't supposed to know crowe was following his every move til he was caught?!!

Agreed, its standard cops and robbers fare. Which is all well and good as long as reviewers and fans havent hyped it as the new Goodfellas :( Its about a six. Good enough, but not something people will still be quoting lines from in 15 years.

its a standard cops and robbers film but isin't anything new at all i give it a 7 cos its a solid movie, don't deserve to be talked about in the same breath as godfather/goodfellas thats for surr, thought russell was better in 3:10 to yuma than this tbh

i went to see this with like 4 friends they all thought it was great.don't no what they saw in it,it was worth seeing and denzel is great in it but its nothing special.its more like to short stories bout two different character til the very end. i no this is how it was in the true story but that didn't make a great film. i'd give it 7 cuz on denzels performance but a great let down.ppl saying it is one of the best films of its genre is a joke and those ppl just follow media hype and these ppl are probably like my friends, one of whom tried to convince me this film will clean up at the oscars tho he hadn't even seen it.idiot

Agree in full. I thought it was over rated and a total let down. When you see a good ganster/crime movie you want to keep watching it when it finishes (EG ~ Goodfellas, Casino, Godfather, the Usual Suspects). When this finished I couldn't of left quicker. If American Ganster gets an oscar I will send a dead pigeon in the post to the Academy with a picture of Lawrie Sanchez.

big fan of jay-z myself and ur rite he is not a scumbag......... any more.he is a great business man tho.he was a drug dealer in brooklyn but then moved out of the city to virginia and maryland to sell drugs as there was more demand and less supply so he upped his price and used this money to set up his first recording.to think junkies all over the east coast of american made jay-z one of the richest musicians in the world and the best hip hop artist.Eddie Hobbs Jay-Z should be an inspiration, don't mind saving and budgetting just sell cocaine to hill billes.

Jay-Z steals other artists material, but I guess thats for the Hip-Hop forum.

Saw this film the other night, good film but nothing spectacular.

I saw this last night and thought it was an excellent film. Top performance by Crowe and washington was his usual self. (he never does any roles outside his little box, im never blown away by him)

Scott did a great job of directing. I dont know why people are comparing this film to the Godfather and Goodfellas in this thread, they're completely different films. (I feel Goodfellas is acclaimed by many for the wrong reasons) This film has more in common with Serpico and the French Connection (they even mention the FC twice in the film!)

O no Faceman I only mentioned those other films because reviews were doing so :) . I really thought I'd like the film but I really did leave very disapointed. I wasn't even tired/hungover.....

thats one of my problems with this movie, which was terribly overhyped imo! washington playes the same character in every movie more or less! if he is "the good guy" or "the bad guy" its the same guy! (and i dont just mean the same face and vocal chords!)

Your right Grames, his character in Training Day is almost identical to the character in this...

good watch i thought, but wasnt as great as hyped " as every bit as epic as the godfather"

seriously what are critics smoking these days?

    this year so far

    1)3:10 to yuma
    2)Transformers
    3)American Gangster

For those who said they aint seen it, watch it, great western film. Quality, two of the best actors around with sterling performances

people are to nitty these days, its a good film, people looking too much into films imo, trying to sound smart.

Just sit back and watch em, stay tuned in so you can understand whats going on

too many people reading reviews, going in with that in mind then relaying thsoe reviews trying to sound smart

I went to see this last night and to be honest I didnt really know what to expect. There had been a lot of hype but at the same time there had been a lot of people who were saying they were disapointed with it. I have to say though that I thought it was very good. The acting from Crowe and Washington was excellent, Scott did a very good job of directing, and the soundtrack was very good. While it is no Goodfellas, I would definately recommend it to anyone and will probably buy it when it comes out on dvd.
