DTT FTA channels not found - no 'Scan Encrypted' option in receiver

I just tried to get the DTT trial on a new Tevion Freeview LCD TV, but no luck. I tried automatic scan as well as a manual scan of channel 54 (where I understand RTE1, RTE2, TG4, and TV3 are located). I'm in a good reception area for Three Rock and get a strong signal and good picture on a standalone box. The Tevion only seems to have two scan options - Automatic and Manual, and I imagine Aldi just put the UK version on sale here.

I know from other contributors and my own experience that some Freeview boxes will only 'find' the DTT FTA trial if the option 'Scan Encrypted Channels' is selected. I'm not technical and don't know why this is, since I presumed that only some of the channels in the trial are encrypted. The Tevion doesn't have this 'Scan Encrypted Channels' option, or if it has, I can't find it.

Does anyone know for sure if that rules out receiving the FTA DTT channels on this receiver, or is there some other way to force it to include the 'encrypted' channels in it's search?

    Thanks.

We've a Panasonic Viera with DTT built in and it holds all the channels (fully encripted and FTA), but even the clear ones have an encripted flag on them. This and possible software issues are preventing the channels from being viewed.
I recently tried scanning on a 20" Toshiba and even though it found the channels - none of the National Chanels could be viewed as in this case there was no option to select Ireland within the Toshibas drop down list of countries. Perhaps there is a way around these issues, but if there is, it isn't widely publicised.

There is an "Ireland" option in the Toshiba somewhere - it's not on the main setup country menu, might be when your in the tuning menu, I had a similar problem with my inlaws Toshiba LCD and the Irish DTT Trials. If you don't find it, let mo know and I'll check where it is the next time I'm in their house.

Does that mean that my Aldi Tevion LCD Freeview receiver is likely to have an "Ireland" menu hidden somewhere? Or is there some other way to force it to find the 'encrypted'' channels.

Why is ''Scan Encrypted Channels" and option anyway? And why are the Irish FTA DTT chanels showing as 'encrypted'?

No Idea, they only show as encrypted on some receivers. Thinking about it the Ireland option in the Toshiba only made the TV scan both VHF and UHF, the DTT Trials did appear on the first scan, but vanished thereafter as the TV channel line up is based on the UK Freeview information table. While they can access the Irish DTT service, they can do so only by directly inputting the channel number the TV allocated to the Irish DTT service on first scan. (If you scan Three Rock first, it's the other way around, Irish Channels and line up, no Freeview services listed.)

    Thanks SRB.

The Tevion doesn't have a 'country' option I'm afraid. I've tried the 'Manual Scan' again and it does get very high signal strength and quality on a number of channels including Channel 54. However it does not 'find' any channels at those Channel Numbers or Frequencies.

The best suggestion I can get from an Irish DTT trial representative is that the receiver in the Aldi may need a network ID for Ireland. It may be set up only for UK Freeview. I had hoped that being a German company, Aldi would have included a more universal DTT tuner that might work in other European countries including Ireland.

It's not looking good, unless someone on the forum knows of a way round it. Anyone know of any hacks to have such tuners 'See' the Irish DTT trials?

Software is shown as Version 20071026 with the No 39162000. The hardware shows as a Zoran 39162 Decoder, Ver. 1.0

If you can type the frequency try a manual scan via 737833.

    Thanks maxg.

I'm afraid I can only type the channel number, not the frequency.

    Regards.

Just bought a 42 inch Tevion tv from Aldi but despite all efforts cant get digital signals to tune in. The help desk offered to send somebody out but if the set is ok I would have to pay for the visit. As far as I can see the problem is that the set is made for the UK market so wont recognise the Irish signal from Three Rock. Anybody else having the same problem?

Try to set the country option to UK.
Maybe you have to do a factory reset to get that option again.

Thanks for the reply Maxg, however there are no setting changes available on the digital source, all that is available is auto or manual scan which will see a good signal strength on ch 54 (Three Rock) but wont tune in any stations. I know the signals are there because I can pick up both tv and DAB radio on a laptop using the same aerial. I think the problem is in the configuration of the tuner. Aldi didn't say when they were selling the unit that it wasn't suitable for Ireland.

At older tevion lcd's there is a APS menue for the auto scan where you can set the country option.
Maybe at your lcd this option is only available in the analogue section and you have to auto scan first the analogue part.

To me it just seems that the TV is detecting the encrypted flag in the DVB stream and refusing to list the channel. In this case, setting the country will have no effect.

Sky digiboxes do the same, sometimes the Videoguard encryption "breaks down" on some channels but the encrypted flag is still set so the box still doesn't show them despite being in the clear.

You simply have to check it out by yourself at your lcd.
At some lcd's the frequency offset handling is only switched on if the country option is set to UK. For 3rock there is a frequency offset in use for the mux holding the irish channels.

Thanks guys, but zero success, got in contact with the tech support dept. but they weren't able to help so looks like its analogue for the present.

Did you set the country option to UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Fredd

Yep did that. This only seems to be used for analogue tuning, three options available UK, France and Other, Makes no difference. Best suggestion from their Tech people was to leave it back for refund, not too helpful, love to know if anybody actually got one to work.

The country option for analogue is also used for the digital scan.
It looks like there is the old problem with the scrambled flag in the sdt.
The tuner soft is configured not to store channels which got that flag.

I got the 19" LCD from aldi, tevion model, with built in DVD and DVB.

I get RTE1/2 TV3/TG4 and a selection of radio stations using rabbits ears, though I live in D24 and have clear line of site to 3rock.

Sometimes RTE1 loses video (freezes, not breakage) but not audio, though quality is >80% and signal is >90%, other channels are fine

Tuning is weird though, if I reset and rescan it may only find the channels once in 10 attempts, same if auto or manual.

But, it's working fine right now :-)
