    pc wont boot to windows
goes to black screen ( dos ? )
    and says :

VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows.
If this file is not in your PATH,you may need to reinstall Windows.

try safe mode - press F8 on startup

did you change anything recently ??
I remember seeing the umax scanner on technet but that's a long shot

type PATH at the dos prompt - what does it say ?

this suggests a reinstall as the fix is long winded
